Activities & Governance 1 Briefly describe the organization’s mission or most significant activities: This is a benevolent organization chartered to care for and support military veterans who have served in war/combat zones around the world in support of a democratic, peaceful way of life, and not on our own shores. We support all veterans with an honorable discharge, regardless of branch or rank. We provide a supportive environment promoting comradery, service to our communities, and to families and survivors of our members through assistance in obtaining Veterans benefits, medical and psych help, burial honors and donations of time and money to those vets and families most in need. We provide transportation to and from medical appointments, food banks, etc. We provide Honor Guard ceremonies at holidays such a Memorial Day, Veterans Day, at flag dedication ceremonies and for funeral services at our local National Cemetery or at local churches and funeral homes.

Briefly describe the organization’s mission: The VFW's Mission Statement is, "No one does more for Veterans". Our local Post tries to exceed those program parameters by providing support for Vets on an individual basis. We provide transportation to medical appointments, food banks and cash donations to keep the electricity on, water from being shut off and shoes for kids. We provide holiday dinners (We provided 14 hams, and 18 turkeys, served the meals, at no cost to Vets In Need. Veterans In Need (VINs) are by far our largest financial line item on a month to month basis. We are seeing an exponential increase in PTSD Vets who have trouble filing paperwork for housing, VA benefits, and mental health needs. For the homeless we have created a special mail system where our Post may be used as an address for those who are chronically transient. We also provide the first month's fees for cell phones. IT is very easy for these guys and ladies to get lost in the system or from one homeless camp to another.

The COVID epidemic changed the face of local non-profit housing assistance organizations. We regularly promote those organizations services and walk applicants through the complicated processes to obtain housing assistance. Most of these individual vets are homeless because of job loss, drug abuse and have adopted homeless postures out of constant rejection by program administrators lack of training or understanding of many victims altered mindset (PTSD). The VINs often give up and go live in the jungle behind a shopping center or convenience store where they wait to raid the dumpster for food. This is a difficult mindset to break. Many VINs do not have transportation to get to appointments, much less state ID's because they don't have access to simple required items such as a birth certificate. We have programs set up to offer guidance, mail service, and little things like phone service for a month. We have specialists in helping VINs apply for medical and disability paperwork, which is insanely complex for someone living in the woods and eating only every other day. The best assistance organization is by far the Salvation Army, at least in our area. However, because the recent economy has escalated rents, and food, space is at a premium. SA does their best, but they are seeing dramatic escalation of mental illness which often makes for difficult levels of behavior by those people most in need. Our guys complain about having to sleep with one eye open because of this negative behavior creating dangerous situations. Quite often they would rather sleep in a homeless camp where the rule of law is peace and cooperation or your out! This is where suicide prevention becomes a real project of its own. We take care of our own!

Our Service Officers and others specially trained, are always available to help Vets, their families and dependents negotiate the myriad of paperwork required to apply for benefits, and the inevitable appeals, which sometimes takes months. Out Veterans Advocates are always available to assist with filling out forms (Where's a homeless guy or woman going to find a computer to fill out forms?) Paperwork for nursing home benefits for those suffering service related injuries or disease is 44 pages long, with required attachments of another 20 or so pages. With death benefits, the families have a genuine need but are hardly in a frame of mind to sit for 4 hours filling out forms to satisfy the VA. We help by doing the work with them and following up as the process takes a couple weeks at least.

Part VI, Line 11b Completed forms of any government filing are reported on at monthly meetings to membership. The forms are also available through the office of the Quartermaster, upon request.
Part VI, Line 15b Post Quartermaster is the only paid officer. Salary is voted on by membership in open meetings. For this year, the Quartermaster salary is $1,000 a month, as a W-2 employee.
Part VI, Line 19 Any member, or member of the public may inspect all of our financial statements and reports simply by asking the Quartermaster - who is available most every day Monday-Friday.
Part VI, Line 6 We have 458 dues paid up members. The majority of these members are Life Members and do not pay annual dues. Dues for Annual Members are $45/yr. There are NO stockholders to this organization.
Part VI, Line 7a House Committee chair, and Adjutant (Record keeper) are appointed by the Commander for a period of one year at a time.
Part XII, Line 2c Reports are complied monthly by the Quartermaster. Each month in conjunction with that report, at least 3 trustees balance that report to bank statements, along with a complete inventory reconciliation.

Explanation:
I offered the same explanation for our 2020 990 return, Briefly, I suffered a heart attack and everything got turned upside down, personally and business. As the Post 3233 elected Quartermaster it was my duty to control all our finances, and file tax returns. I had completed both 2020 and 2021 990's but couldn't figure out how to file them electronically, so, I sent them in the mail to Ogden, Utah as I had in years past. They were received there and promptly returned as having to be filed electronically. During my recovery from my by-pass I completely forgot about them. In April, 2023 I retired for health reasons and a new Quartermaster was elected and took over July 1, 2023. We discovered the unfiled returns and I am filing them now. This was my fault and the Post itself should not be made to suffer penalties - we've got little money as it is after spending a hundred thousand for a new roof after two hurricanes that insurance wouldn't cover because the roof was so old anyway. I accept the blame for not filing in a timely manner, and not understanding the necessary technology. Not an excuse, but I also objected to having to pay to file a return where I have complete faith in my numbers.
