MOTT WAS BORN TEN YEARS AFTER THE DEATH OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND ONE YEAR BEFORE THE 1876 CENTENNIAL OF THE FOUNDING OF THE UNITED STATES. HE NOT ONLY LIVED THROUGH THE MOST DRAMATIC TECHNOLOGICAL SHIFT AND PERIOD OF ECONOMIC GROWTH THAT HAD YET BEEN KNOWN, BUT HE ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN AND CONTRIBUTED TO THESE EVENTS AS A MAJOR INNOVATOR AND LEADER AT GENERAL MOTORS, AS A PUBLIC OFFICIAL, AND AS A PHILANTHROPIST. THIS VIVID BIOGRAPHY PORTRAYS A COMPLEX, BRILLIANT, OFTEN CONTRADICTORY, AND ULTIMATELY FASCINATING MAN. THE BOOK IS BEING SOLD TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

GENERAL PART VIII-A THE RUTH MOTT FOUNDATION (THE "FOUNDATION") WAS ESTABLISHED BY RUTH MOTT, A PHILANTHROPIST AND WIFE OF AUTOMOTIVE PIONEER CHARLES STEWART MOTT, TO EXTEND THE FOUNDER'S PHILANTHROPIC LEGACY IN HER CHOSEN COMMUNITY OF FLINT, MICHIGAN. THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION IS TO ADVOCATE, STIMULATE, AND SUPPORT COMMUNITY VITALITY THROUGH GRANTMAKING AND ITS OPERATION OF APPLEWOOD: THE CHARLES STEWART MOTT ESTATE ("APPLEWOOD"). AS A FOUNDATION ADMINISTERED PROGRAM, APPLEWOOD IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FREE OF CHARGE, AND IS LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. THE ESTATE'S BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS WEAVE TOGETHER THE MOTT FAMILY'S PAST AND PRESENT DEDICATION TO SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY. IN THAT TRADITION, THE RUTH MOTT FOUNDATION OFFERS ITS RESIDENT EXPERTISE IN GRANTMAKING, HORTICULTURE, HISTORIC PRESERVATION, AND OTHER AREAS TO BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY; PROVIDES PUBLIC GARDEN AND HOUSE TOURS; AND CONDUCTS WORKSHOPS, TRAININGS, FIELD TRIPS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS, AND CONVENINGS. THE HOUSE AND GROUNDS HAVE BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE INCLUDING NUMEROUS EXHIBITS. THE ESTATE IS NORMALLY OPEN THURSDAY-SUNDAY, MAY-OCTOBER. THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THESE EXPENDITURES ARE REPORTED AS DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES.
PRESERVATION/OPERATION OF APPLEWOOD ESTATE $1,182,864 PART VIII-A THE RUTH MOTT FOUNDATION PRESERVES AND MAINTAINS THE HISTORIC APPLEWOOD ESTATE AS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE AND DESIGNS, DELIVERS, AND SUPPORTS COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY VITALITY IN THE GREATER FLINT AREA. A STAFF OF HORTICULTURISTS ALONG WITH HELP FROM SEASONAL AND CONTRACTUAL WORKERS AND PARTNERSHIPS SUPPORT THE DESIGN AND CONTINUOUS MAINTENANCE OF THE ESTATE'S EXTENSIVE GARDENS AND LANDSCAPE, WHICH PROVIDE BEAUTY AND A SITE FOR PUBLIC PROGRAMMING. DURING 2022, APPLEWOOD HORTICULTURE STAFF MAINTAINED THE GARDENS, ORCHARDS, AND GROUNDS AND PREPARED THEM FOR THE FOLLOWING SEASON, INCLUDING PLANTING 4,000 TULIP BULBS. THE 2022 FRUIT HARVEST INCLUDED PLUMS, TART CHERRIES, PEARS, PEACHES, APPLES, BLUEBERRIES, SASKATOONS, AND CRABAPPLES. THE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES WERE AVAILABLE AT NO COST TO GUESTS DURING OPEN HOURS, PROCESSED FOR FUTURE PROGRAMMING, OR DONATED TO LOCAL NONPROFITS. IN TOTAL, 336 BUSHELS OF APPLES WERE HARVESTED.THE TASTE OF APPLEWOOD PROGRAM AT THE START OF THE SEASON INCLUDED APPLE JELLY MADE FROM APPLES HARVESTED IN PREVIOUS SEASONS, ILLUSTRATING THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING FROM TIMES OF PLENTY SO THAT FOOD IS AVAILABLE YEAR-ROUND, JUST AS THE MOTTS DID. AS THE SEASON PROGRESSED, FRESH PRODUCE WAS PROVIDED. APPLE TASTING WAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A BROADER ARRAY OF APPLE VARIETIES. THIS ALLOWED VISITORS TO TASTE AND TAKE HOME FOR COOKING OR BAKING MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF APPLES THEY DON'T SEE IN SUPERMARKETS. HORTICULTURE STAFF SUPPORTED THE NEW "IN THE GARDENS" PROGRAM TO SHARE WITH VISITORS THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE IN TOPICS SUCH AS GARDENING, LAWN CARE, GARDEN CLEANUP, AND FLOWER DRYING. CARING FOR YARDS AND GARDENS WAS HIGHLIGHTED AS A FORM OF CIVIC PARTICIPATION.
COLLECTIONS $387,710 PART VIII-A THE PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION OF THE ESTATE'S HISTORICAL OBJECTS CONTINUED IN 2022 THROUGH REGULAR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE. THE COLLECTION CONTAINS MORE THAN 350,000 ITEMS, INCLUDING THE APPLEWOOD HOUSE AND FARM, FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS, FURNITURE AND FURNISHINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, MEMORABILIA, AUDIO RECORDINGS, MOVING IMAGES, AND BOOKS. DURING 2022, CONTINUED EFFORTS WERE MADE TO INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY TO THE COLLECTIONS AND THE MOTT FAMILY LEGACY FOR INDIVIDUALS, FLINT, AND THE NATION'S HISTORIANS. SPECIFICALLY, THE HOME OF C.S. AND RUTH MOTT WAS REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC ON A LIMITED BASIS. APPLEWOOD'S COLLECTIONS CONTINUE TO BE ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THE FOUNDATION'S WEBSITE FEATURING A VIRTUAL TOUR. MAINTENANCE OF THE COLLECTIONS INCLUDED ONGOING INVENTORIES AND DATABASE UPDATES, CATALOGING OF NEW DONATIONS, AND DIGITALLY PRESERVING COLLECTIONS TO ALLOW INCREASED ONLINE ACCESS TO SUPPORT FUTURE EXHIBITS AND MATERIALS.
APPLEWOOD EDUCATION & EVENTS $498,984 PART VIII-A IN 2022, APPLEWOOD'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS, SHARED THE ENDURING LEGACY OF C.S. AND RUTH MOTT BY SHOWCASING THE MOTTS' COMMITMENT TO CIVIC PARTICIPATION. PROGRAMMING RETURNED TO OPEN DAYS AT APPLEWOOD AND INCLUDED THE FAVORITES STORYTIME AND BRING YOUR LUNCH AND LEARN AS WELL AS NEW PROGRAMS SUCH AS IN THE GARDENS, A DROP-IN PROGRAM HELD EVERY THURSDAY WHERE VISITORS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT WITH, LEARN FROM, AND ASK QUESTIONS OF OUR HORTICULTURE STAFF.
