| FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | INCORPORATED ON JULY 2, 1951, THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION (ASA) IS THE OPERATING ORGANIZATION OF THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (ASO)AND MILLER SYMPHONY HALL (MSH). THE MISSION OF THE ASA IS TO PROVIDE A FIRST-CLASS ORCHESTRA AND HALL, QUALITY PERFORMING ARTS, AND CULTURAL EDUCATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY. EACH YEAR, THE ASA FULFILLS ITS MISSION FIRST THROUGH HIGH- QUALITY PROGRAMMING AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES THAT IMPACT COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF ALL AGES AND SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS AND SECOND THROUGH IMPROVEMENTS AND MAINTENANCE OF MILLER SYMPHONY HALL. |

THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, WHOSE 74 CLASSICALLY TRAINED MUSICIANS ARE DRAWN FROM PENNSYLVANIA AND SIX SURROUNDING STATES, HAS RISEN TO HIGH STANDARDS OF ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE UNDER MUSIC DIRECTOR DIANE WITTRY DURING THE PAST 28 SEASONS. THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION IS ONE OF ONLY SEVERAL SYMPHONIC ORGANIZATIONS IN AMERICA TO OWN ITS OWN PERFORMANCE VENUE, HISTORIC MILLER SYMPHONY HALL. SINCE THE EARLY 2000'S THE SYMPHONY HAS FUNDED A SERIES OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS, AT A COST OF MORE THAN S12 MILLION, BEGINNING WITH THE FOWLER EDUCATION WING, WHICH TRANSFORMED THE 1899-ERA THEATER INTO A FIRST-CLASS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER. MILLER SYMPHONY HALL OFFERS THREE PERFORMANCE SPACES AND FACILITIES THAT CAN BE RENTED BY THE PUBLIC FOR MEETINGS, CONFERENCES, AND SPECIAL EVENTS. DURING THE 2021-2022 SEASON, THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION PRODUCED, HOSTED, AND PRESENTED A TOTAL OF 47 LIVE AND IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES: 15 ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CLASSICAL AND POPS CONCERTS; 10 JAZZ UPSTAIRS PERFORMANCES; 13 MET IN HD BROADCASTS; AND A VARIETY OF OTHER PROGRAMS, INCLUDING A LIVE PERFORMANCE BY THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF THE MUSIC OF STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE DURING A SHOWING OF THE MOVIE AT THE PPL CENTER. TWO NEW MUSIC CHAMBER SERIES CONCERTS WERE HELD AS PART OF THE COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM. THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE VITAL TO ITS MISSION. EL SISTEMA LEHIGH VALLEY, THE DAILY AFTERSCHOOL STRING INSTRUMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM, RETURNED TO IN-PERSON SESSIONS WITH A RECORD 122 STUDENTS FROM 19 LEHIGH VALLEY SCHOOLS. GROUP LESSONS WERE HELD AFTER SCHOOL FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE PROGRAM'S STUDENTS, WHILE STUDENTS ATTENDING RAUB MIDDLE SCHOOL AND SOUTH MOUNTAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL HAD LESSONS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. DUE TO FLOODING CAUSED BY A BROKEN PIPE IN MILLER SYMPHONY HALL, THE 2022 YOUTH AND FAMILY CONCERT COULD NOT BE HELD, BUT THE SYMPHONY CREATED A SERIES OF PERFORMANCES THAT INVOLVED MUSICIANS OF THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TRAVELING TO LOCAL SCHOOLS. THE SYMPHONY ORGANIZED A WOODWIND QUINTET THAT MADE 7 LIVE PERFORMANCES OF "PETER AND THE WOLF" AT 5 SCHOOLS FOR APPROXIMATELY 1,000 STUDENTS. THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA'S COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM CONTINUED WITH TWO NEW MUSIC CHAMBER SERIES CONCERTS. HELD AT THE ALLENTOWN ART MUSEUM AND THE LEHIGH VALLEY CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS. THE SYMPHONY BALL, WHICH RAISES FUNDING FOR THESE EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND WAS SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 2022, WAS DEFERRED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2022 DUE TO COVID-RELATED CONCERNS. |
