THE MEN'S BLACK GATHERING: MEN GATHER TWICE A MONTH FOR TAI CHI, GENERAL FITNESS, HEALTHY FOOD AND DISCUSSION OF HEALTHY EATING. MEN DISCUSS HEALTHY LIFESTYLES AND PAST TRAUMA. THIS BECOMES A SAFE PLACE FOR OUR SENIOR MEN. FARMER TRAINING PROGRAMS THE TRAINING OF FARMER'S CONTINUED IN 2022 BUT WITH A SLIGHTLY REDUCED RECRUITMENT DUE TO COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS AS VARIANTS EMERGED. THE 9- WEEK PROGRAM FOR TRAINING FARMERS RESULTED IN 19 PARTICIPANTS WHO GAINED GENERAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT URBAN AGRICULTURE. THE 20 WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM WAS MORE DETAILED WITH PARTICIPANTS LEARNING ABOUT PLANTING, SEEDS, WEEDING, PATHWAY CONSTRUCTION, CROP ROTATION, ORGANIC METHODS FOR PEST CONTROL, HARVESTING, AND FARM BUSINESS PLANNING. |

FUNDED BY DONORS COMMITTED TO FIGHTING HUNGER AND FOOD INSECURITY THE MEALS WERE PREPARED BY BIPOC CHEFS AND CONSISTED OF FRESH VEGETABLES, A STARCH, AND A PROTEIN WITH ENOUGH FOOD FOR A FAMILY OF THREE, "THANKSGIVING / INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S CELEBRATION FOOD DISTRIBUTION OF 400 TURKEYS WITH ALL THE FIXINGS FOR A MEAL TO FAMILIES NOMINATED BY PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS AND NEIGHBORS, "HELD "FOOD DAY" A FREE EVENT FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY WITH THREE DEMONSTRATIONS OF CULTURALLY RELEVANT FOOD BY DIVERSE CHEFS, A CIDER-PRESS AND ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN, FAMILY HEALTH EDUCATION DISCUSSIONS, AND A FREE BOOK GIVE AWAY, "VOLUNTEERS CONTINUED TO HELP UFI WITH FARMING AND WEEDING. THIS MEANS THAT THE FARMLAND, THE BARN, THE GREENHOUSE AND ITS THREE BUILDINGS ARE OWNED OUTRIGHT WITHOUT LIENS BY UFI. THIS IS A LANDMARK EFFORT FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AS SO MUCH OF THE CITY HAS BEEN COMPROMISED BY GENTRIFICATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. ADDITIONAL FUNDS WERE USED TO ESTABLISH A DESIGNATED FISCAL RESERVE FUND HELPING TO ASSURE UFI'S FINANCIAL STABILITY. IN 2021, UFI WAS AWARDED A GRANT FROM THE MA CULTURAL FACILITIES FUND, THAT RESULTED IN A DETAILED FACILITIES MAINTENANCE PLAN SO SPECIFIC FUNDS HAVE BEEN, AND WILL BE, RAISED FOR DESIGNATED BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE, LONG-TERM UPKEEP AND NECESSARY REPLACEMENT. THE FCEF PURCHASE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT HELPS SECURE AND IDENTIFY UFI'S LOCALE AS A HUB OF LEARNING AND URBAN FARMING. UFI'S ACTIVITIES IN THE REALM OF CULTURE, CULINARY ARTS, EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND COMMUNITY-BUILDING ARE KEY IN SERVING BOSTON'S NEIGHBORHOODS AND ATTRACTING PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE CITY.
