ALMOST A THOUSAND ADULTS, 15 AND OLDER, ENROLLED IN THE INTENSIVE FOUR-MONTH LITERACY PROGRAM IN 2022, WITH 819 GRADUATING AFTER A MINIMUM OF 320 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LEARNING. 619 OF THE GRADUATES WERE WOMEN AND RTEENAGE GIRLS. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES THE BASIC SKILLS OF READING, WRITING AND MATH, AND INCORPORATES INTO THE CURRICULUM TOPICS SUCH AS GOOD HYGIENE, SAFE SANITATION, NUTRITION, HOW TO PLANT AND NURTURE A FAMILY GARDEN, AND HOW TO CREATE A FAMILY BUDGET. THESE CLASSES ARE TAUGHT IN MALAGASY, THE LANGUAGE OF THE POOR, NOT IN FRENCH, THE LANGUAGE OF THE LEARNED AND THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE LITERACY INITIATIVE IS THE FEEDER PROGRAM FOR THE WOMEN'S SELF-HELP GROUPS. THE GOAL OF THE SELF-HELP GROUPS IS TO PROVIDE LITERACY PROGRAM GRADUATES WITH A PATH TO ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY. BY WORKING TOGETHER AND POOLING THEIR SAVINGS, THE GROUPS BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR LOANS THAT CAN BE INVESTED IN CREATING SMALL BUSINESSES. THE LITERACY INITIATIVE ALSO CONTINUES TO SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION FOR POOR YOUTH, GIVING THEM ACCESS TO COMPUTER TRAINING THAT MAKES THEM ELIGIBLE FOR BETTER-PAYING JOBS. TWO HUNDRED ELEVEN STUDENTS GRADUATED IN 2022 ALL SKILLED IN WORD, EXCEL, POWER POINT AND INTERNET RESEARCH. IN ADDITION, THE LITERACY INITIATIVE NOW INCLUDES A "SCHOOL INSERTION" PROGRAM THAT SRIVES TO RE-ENROLL INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUNGSTERS WHO HAVE DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL FOR FINANCIAL AND FAMILY REASONS. IN 2022, FIFTY YOUNGSTERS WERE RE-ENROLLED IN SCHOOL AND PROVIDED WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND MEALS. |

AS IN THE PREVIOUS MODEL HEALTHY VILLAGES, THE GOAL IS TO IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH BY BRINGING CLEAN WATER, HYGIENE EDUCATION, SAFE SANITATION AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SMOKELESS OVENS TO AN ENTIRE FOKONTANY AND ITS CLUSTER OF SMALL VILLAGES AND HAMLETS. SOME 4,000 PEOPLE, MORE THAN 800 FAMILIES, CALL ANALAMALOTRA THEIR HOME, MAKING IT THE LARGEST OF OUR MHV ENDEAVORS. CRMF RAISED 100,000 IN SUPPORT OF THIS EFFORT WHICH ALSO ENJOYED ROTARY FOUNDATION SUPPORT. THE DATA DEMONSTRATES AGAIN THE DRAMATIC IMPACT ON PUBLIC HEALTH OF THE MODEL HEALTHY VILLAGE APPROACH. ANALAMALOTRA HAS 818 HOUSEOHLDS AND 4,280 RESIDENTS. THE ANNUAL RATE OF INFECTIOUS DIARRHEA DECLINED FROM 60.71% WHEN THE PROJECT BEGAN TO 5.45% AT THE END OF 2022. THE RATE OF RESPIRATORY DISEASE FELL FROM 48.4% IN 2019 TO 7.45% IN 2022. WE ALSO TRACK THE DECLINE IN SCHOOL ABSENTEEISM. IN ANALAMALOTRA, SCHOOL ABSENTEEISM FELL FROM 14.82% WHEN THE PROJECT STARTED TO 6.66% AT THE END OF 2022. SELF-HELP GROUPS OPERATE IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MODEL HEALTHY VILLAGE PROJECT IN THE RURAL AREA. AS IN THE CITY, THE WOMEN LEARN TO WORK TOGETHER TO SAVE MONEY AND LAUNCH SMALL BUSINESSES. THERE ARE 55 WOMEN CURRENTLY DEVELOPING INCOME-GENERATING ACTIVITIES IN FOUR GROUPS. THEIR WIDE VARIETY OF SELF-HELP ACTIVITIES INCLUDE FISH-FARMING, CHICKEN BREEDING, SELLING VEGETABLES, FLOWERS AND GRAVEL, AND WORKING AS SEAMSTRESSES. |
