WE ARE ALSO COMMITTED TO DIVERSIFYING OUR ORGANIZATION BY INTERACTING WITH OTHER CULTURE AND COMMUNITIES. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A | IN 2023, THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION SIGNIFICANTLY EXPANDED ITS OUTREACH PROGRAMS AND CHARITABLE INITIATIVES. KEY EVENTS INCLUDED VISITS FROM PROMINENT TIBETAN LEADERS, CHARITABLE DONATIONS TO LOCAL SERVICES, AND VIBRANT CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS. WE KICKED OFF THE YEAR WITH A VISIT FROM LOBSANG DELEK RINPOCHE ON JANUARY 11TH WHO LED A PRAYER SESSION AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER PRAYER HALL. TEA AND REFRESHMENTS WERE SERVED FOLLOWED BY A GROUP PHOTO WITH HIS EMINENCE. ON FEBRUARY 4TH THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION DONATED BY SPONSORING LUNCH AT THE PAMELA ATKINSON HOMELESS SERVICE IN SOUTH SALT LAKE. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER DONATION TO THE UTAH FOOD BANK AND THE SALT LAKE ANIMAL SHELTER ON FEBRUARY 9TH. ON FEBRUARY 11TH THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE TIBETAN GOVERNMENT IN EXILE CAME TO VISIT THE COMMUNITY CENTER AND A DINNER GALA WAS ORGANIZED. THE PRIME MINISTER MET WITH THE SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS FOR AN HOUR LONG LECTURE FOLLOWED BY A 3 HOUR DISCUSSION WITH THE TIBETAN COMMUNITY. LOSAR 2023 FESTIVITIES WERE IN FEBRUARY, CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON. THE DAY BEGAN WITH THE COMMUNITY CENTER ADORNED WITH COLORFUL PRAYER FLAGS AND MORNING PRAYERS. THE GUEST OF HONOR FOR OUR EVENING PROGRAM WAS THE DEPUTY CONSULATE GENERAL OF INDIA, AND THE GUEST LIST WAS MADE UP OF OUR DONORS AND FRIENDS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE EVENT HAD TIBETAN DANCE PERFORMANCES BY THE SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. ON MARCH 10TH, THE COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER TO OBSERVE THE 63RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1959 TIBETAN UPRISING. THERE WAS A STRONG TURNOUT AS MEMBERS MARCHED FROM THE FEDERAL BUILDING TO THE STATE CAPITOL. UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION ALSO SENT TWO TEACHERS OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM TO A TEACHERS WORKSHOP IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA ON MARCH 17TH. THIS WORKSHOP WAS AIMED AT TEACHING SOCIAL, ETHICAL AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TO STUDENTS. TOWARDS THE END OF MARCH, ON THE 27TH WE SENT 3 STUDENTS TO WASHINGTON D.C TO ATTEND THE TIBET LOBBY DAY TO MEET WITH REPRESENTATIVES AT THE U.S CAPITOL. THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE ANNUAL UTAH LIVING TRADITION FESTIVAL IN MAY, CELEBRATING THE STATE'S CULTURAL DIVERSITY. FOR OVER TWO DECADES, OUR COMMUNITY HAS SHOWCASED TRADITIONAL DANCE PERFORMANCES AND PREPARED DELICIOUS FOOD, REFLECTING OUR PASSION AND DEDICATION. WE PARTICIPATED IN THE ASIAN FESTIVALS ON JUNE 2ND WITH A CULTURAL BOOTH. THE BOOTH WAS DECORATED, SHOWCASING THE RICH TIBETAN HISTORY AND CULTURE. WE SPOKE TO HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE THAT WANTED TO LEARN ABOUT TIBET AND ITS HISTORY. JULY 8TH WAS A MOMENTOUS DAY AS THE COMMUNITY CELEBRATED HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA'S 88TH BIRTHDAY. MORNING PRAYERS WERE FOLLOWED BY AN EVENING PROGRAM AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER WITH PERFORMANCES FROM TALENTED INDIVIDUALS AND SUNDAY SCHOOL CHILDREN. THE CELEBRATIONS INCLUDED DINNER, TRADITIONAL TIBETAN CIRCLE DANCE. AUGUST WAS MARKED BY THE PASSING OF A LONG TIME COMMUNITY MEMBER IN UTAH. WE HELD A PRAYER CEREMONY IN THE EVENING FOR THE DEPARTED. THE PRAYER SESSION WAS ATTENDED BY ALL THE FAMILIES AND DINNER WAS SERVED BY THE FAMILY OF THE DECEASED. UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION ORGANIZED A FUNDRAISING DRIVE FOR THE FLOODS THAT HAD AFFECTED PEOPLE IN INDIA. THIS DRIVE WAS AIMED AT PROVIDING RELIEF TO THE FLOOD AFFECTED VICTIMS AND CONSTRUCTION OF DIKES TO PREVENT FUTURE FLOODING. THE FUNDRAISING DRIVE WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AND EVERY SINGLE FAMILY FROM THE COMMUNITY GAVE GENEROUSLY. ON AUGUST 31ST, WE CELEBRATED THE TIBETAN DEMOCRACY DAY WITH A POT LUCK DINNER. DURING THIS TIME WE SENT 2 REPRESENTATIVES TO THE ANNUAL NORTH AMERICA TIBETAN ASSOCIATIONS MEETING IN TORONTO. SEPTEMBER FEATURED A SUMMER CAMP FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS, STARTING AT THE WHEELER FARM WHERE KIDS TOURED THE FARM AND LEARNED THE WORKINGS OF THE FARM. IN THE EVENING THEY RETURNED TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER TO MAKE DINNER ASSISTED BY THE PARENTS. THE CHILDREN CAMPED AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER, WHILE PARENTS AND EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN MEAL PREPARATIONS. THE CAMP WAS A SUCCESS. ON SEPTEMBER 21ST, CONGRESSMAN CHRIS STEWART PAID A VISIT TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER AND MET WITH THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEMBERS. OCTOBER 1ST, THE UTAH TIBETAN ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEMBERS MET WITH THE MAYOR OF SALT LAKE CITY ERIN MENDENHALL TO INVITE THE MAYOR TO THE 2024 WEST COAST PICNIC AND TO REQUEST FUNDING FROM THE CITY FOR THE EVENT. MAYOR OF SOUTH SALT LAKE CHERIE WOOD PAID A VISIT TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER ON OCTOBER 20TH. DURING HER VISIT WE DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF PUTTING UP AN HONORARY STREET NAME IN FRONT OF OUR COMMUNITY CENTER. IN DECEMBER WE HAD THE 34TH COMMEMORATION OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARDED TO HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA. OUR GUEST OF HONOR WAS THE TIBETAN PARLIAMENTARIAN TENZIN JIGME FROM MINNESOTA AND SOUTH SALT LAKE MAYOR CHERIE WOOD. THE MAYOR ALSO UNVEILED THE HONORARY STREET NAME "DALAI LAMA WAY" IN FRONT OF THE COMMUNITY. DINNER AND DANCE PERFORMANCES BY THE SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENTS ENDED THE EVENING. THE FOLLOWING DAY TENZIN JIGME LA PAID A VISIT TO THE TIBETAN SUNDAY SCHOOL AND MET WITH THE TIBETAN COMMUNITY FOR A BRIEF TALK AND LUNCH. THE NEW YEARS EVE COMMUNITY PARTY BROUGHT 2023 TO AN END. |
