SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES PART IX-A THE JANET H. AND C. HARRY KNOWLES FOUNDATION, INC (THE "FOUNDATION") WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1999 TO INCREASE THE NUMBER AND QUALITY OF HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS FOR GRADES 9-12 IN THE UNITED STATES. JANET AND HARRY KNOWLES (THE "KNOWLES") ESTABLISHED THE FOUNDATION BASED ON A STRONG BELIEF THAT AMERICA'S WELL-BEING AND ECONOMIC FUTURE HINGES ON BRINGING NEW SCIENTISTS AND MATHEMATICIANS INTO THE WORKFORCE. THEY ALSO WANTED TO RECOGNIZE THE TEACHERS WHO HELPED TO SHAPE THEIR LIVES. THEIR GOAL WAS, AND STILL IS, TO INCREASE THE QUANTITY OF HIGH QUALITY HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS IN THE UNITED STATES. THE FOUNDATION HAS REGISTERED FOR AN ALTERNATIVE BUSINESS NAME AND OPERATES AS THE KNOWLES TEACHER INITIATIVE. THE KNOWLES TEACHER INITIATIVE IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING A NATIONAL NETWORK OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHERS IN BUILDING LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION, FACILITATING EXPLORATION AND INNOVATION, AND ULTIMATELY IMPROVING MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE U.S. THE KNOWLES TEACHING FELLOWSHIP IS A COMPREHENSIVE, FIVE-YEAR PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS EARLY-CAREER, HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHERS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO DEVELOP TEACHING EXPERTISE AND LEAD FROM THE CLASSROOM. EACH YEAR, WE AWARD KNOWLES TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS TO APPROXIMATELY 35 INDIVIDUALS WITH DEEP AND BROAD DISCIPLINARY KNOWLEDGE IN MATHEMATICS, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY AND/OR PHYSICS WHO ALSO DEMONSTRATE THE COMMITMENT AND POTENTIAL TO BECOME OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS AND LEADERS. AFTER COMPLETING THE FIFTH YEAR OF THE FELLOWSHIP, KNOWLES TEACHING FELLOWS BECOME SENIOR FELLOWS WHO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO REMAIN INVOLVED IN THE KNOWLES COMMUNITY THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREERS AND BE SUPPORTED IN ONGOING LEADERSHIP EFFORTS.ALTHOUGH WE INVEST DIRECTLY IN INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS THROUGH THE KNOWLES TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM, THE ULTIMATE OUTCOME OF THIS INVESTMENT IS A STRONG, NATIONAL NETWORK OF OUTSTANDING SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS WITH THE DRIVE AND ABILITY TO IMPROVE THE U.S. EDUCATION SYSTEM BEGINNING WITH, BUT EXTENDING WELL BEYOND, THEIR OWN CLASSROOMS. ULTIMATELY, WE SEEK TO INCREASE THE IMPACT OF OUR PROGRAMS BY SUSTAINING, LEVERAGING AND AMPLIFYING THE INFLUENCE OF THIS NETWORK.AS PART OF OUR SENIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM, WE OFFER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS AND PROVIDE SERVICES TO SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS THROUGH THE KNOWLES ACADEMY. KNOWLES ACADEMY OFFERINGS, LED BY SENIOR FELLOWS AND OUR STAFF, ARE CHARACTERIZED BY A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BY TEACHERS, FOR TEACHERS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY. THROUGH OUR EVALUATION PROGRAM, EACH OF OUR PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES ARE EVALUATED BY A TEAM, ALLOWING US TO REFINE OUR PROGRAMS AS NEEDED AND TO DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF PRACTITIONER INQUIRY, ITS INFLUENCE ON TEACHER AND STUDENT LEARNING, AND THE IMPACT OF TEACHER LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY.
