What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefit society, recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(8) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). In addition, pursuant to a group exemption, the IRS recognizes all councils in the United States as fraternal lodges.
