DURING THE SPRING SEMESTER, WE SERVED 72 STUDENTS DAILY. DURING THE FALL SEMESTER, 87 STUDENTS WERE SERVED DAILY. THE CENTER PROVIDED DAILY TRANSPORTATION FROM THE SCHOOLS TO THE LEARNING FACILITY. EACH STUDENT SPENT 3 HOURS EACH AFTERNOON AT THE CENTER TOTALING MORE THAN 363 HOURS PER STUDENT DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, THE CENTER PROVIDED NEARLY 90 HOURS OF GUIDED PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES TO EACH STUDENT, AND MORE THAN 174 HOURS OF ENRICHMENT TO EACH CHILD INCLUDING BIBLE STUDY, 3D PRINTING, ART, MUSIC, BALLET AND ATHLETICS. THE CENTER ALSO PROVIDED MORE THAN 140 HOURS OF HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE, TUTORING AND TEST PREPARATION ASSISTANCE TO EACH STUDENT. THE CENTER SERVED NEARLY 9,200 HEALTHY SNACKS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. MIDDLE SCHOOL BEGAIN ITS OFFICIAL STREAM TEAM. OUR MOVE TO THE NEW LOCATION HAS ALLOWED US SPACE TO HAVE A SEPARATE STREAM ROOM, WHICH IS GAME-CHANGING. IN OUR NEW ROOM, WE CAN HOUSE OUR 3D PRINTERS, ROBOTICS, AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES. IN THE FIRST YEAR OF THIS TEAMS EXISTENCE, THEY WON AN HONORABLE MENTION PRIZE FOR A GLOBAL ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING COMPETITION. UNDER THE MENTORSHIP OF AUBURN UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ALLISON LEDFORD, PHD, AND THE SUPERVISION OF APRIL BIGGS, OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOM COORDINATOR, OUR TEAM RESEARCHED AND DEVELOPED A DEVICE TO SUPPORT THE HEARING-IMPAIRED COMMUNITY. THIS PROJECT WAS NEAR AND DEAR TO THE TEAMS HEART; A TEAM MEMBERS MOTHER IS DEAF. HE IS FLUENT IN ASL AND HAS SERVED AS HER TRANSLATOR IN MANY SITUATIONS. THE CENTER ALSO LAUNCHED ITS TECH TEAM THIS YEAR. THIS NEW OFFERING FOCUSES ON THE ARTS AND THEIR OVERLAP WITH TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE. THIS GROUP ALSO HAS A SPACE, THE AV ROOM, WHERE THEY HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY TOOLS, DEVICES, AND SOFTWARE. THE PARTICIPATING TEENS ARE LEARNING PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEOGRAPHY, PHOTO AND VIDEO EDITING, DRONE PILOTING, SOUND ENGINEERING, AND MORE. THE CENTER HAS ALSO LAUNCHED A VIDEO PODCAST TO TELL THE STORIES OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, DONORS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THIS NEW OUTLET HAS BEEN A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE LEARNING MEDIA ARTS. IN ADDITION TO THE AFOREMENTIONED STREAM CONTENT, THE LEARNING CENTER HAS CONTINUED TO ENRICH ITS MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COLLEGE PREP. STUDENTS DEVELOPED READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, AND LOGICAL THINKING. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THE CENTER DISTRIBUTED 157 BAGS OF HOUSEHOLD AND PERSONAL ITEMS SUCH AS DETERGENT, SHAMPOO AND TOOTHPASTE TO STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. OTHER DONATED ITEMS INCLUDED 46 BACKPACKS FILLED WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES, WINTER COATS, 52 THANKSGIVING DINNERS (INCLUDING TURKEYS)AND 56 EASTER MEALS (INCLUDING HAMS), CHRISTMAS TOYS FOR 130 CHILDREN AND BALLET COSTUMES AND SHOES FOR THE GIRLS WHO PARTICIPATED IN OUR DANCE PROGRAM. FAMILIES WERE ALSO GIVEN GIFT CARDS TO KROGER AND WALMART, EYEGLASSES FOR SEVERAL STUDENTS, MAJOR EYE SURGERY FOR 1 STUDENT, RENTAL ASSISTANCE, MEDICAL BILLS ASSISTANCE, HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES, AND CAR REPAIR SERVICES. THE CENTER PROVIDED MEALS, T-SHIRTS, AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR A PARTY AFTER THE GIVE IT BACK TRACK 5K FOR 150 PEOPLE AND PROVIDED JEWELRY AND SPA TREATMENT FOR A PARENT EVENING DURING THE YEAR. LOCAL BUSINESSES, CHURCHES, AND INDIVIDUALS DONATED THESE ITEMS AND SERVICES TO HELP SUPPORT THE CENTERS FAMILIES. |
