| Other | Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center 2022 Statement of Accomplishments In 2022 we reopened for small and medium-sized school groups for our field trip program, but we still did not return to the pre-pandemic class sizes. We served public, private, and homeschool groups and taught them about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and its local roots. We gave tours to adult groups and tourists from both in-state and out-of-state. We ran outdoor arts programs for visitors of all ages related to exploration, such as journaling based on the Lewis and Clark journals, and photography, bringing in modern skills. We worked with area Cub Scouts on badge requirements. In partnership with the County of Albemarle, we mentored a high school capstone arborist project. We did research and exhibition planning for the City of Charlottesvilles Lewis & Clark statue that had been moved to our location in 2021 pending a final decision on a transfer of ownership. That statue, Charles Kecks Their First View of the Pacific, had been a monument on Main Street since 1919. After many years of community debate, the statue was voted to be taken down because of controversy involving the depiction of Sacajawea. The base still stands on Main Street, and LCEC received the upper bronze portion of the statue, now on display outside. Throughout 2022 we did extensive research and writing on the Keck statue. We fabricated new displays for our history tour that relate to the statue, including 3-D print outs of scans that also relate to STEM studies. We participated in Virginia Association of Museum conference, focusing on the impact of race on interpretations of art and history. We participated in a Moton Museum meeting about museums in a time of reexamination concerning race and interpretation. Attendees included museum leaders from throughout the state. We did extensive site work and debris removal from damage from storms to built-structures, such as our kayak shed and outdoor storage. In May, we held a major community event called FLOWRALIA, which involved musicians, painters, installation artists, and more. This was a free event that welcomed over 800 people. Adults and children learned about plein art painting and about appreciating nature through art. The streams and river were highlighted through drama, plein air painting, and installations. FLOWRALIA was part of the River Renaissance project started by the County of Albemarle and local non-profits, including LCEC, to highlight the watershed and in particular the Rivanna River where the Exploratory Center is located and which has historical connections to Thomas Jefferson and to the Lewis and Clark families. We opened our building to events for other non-profits, such as the Nature Conservancy, Building Goodness, Piedmont Environmental Council. In the summer we ran small group camps for children related to exploration. We worked with City of Charlottesville special needs summer camp groups and with private special needs camps. We partnered with CBI Forest School on outdoor programs. In addition, we taught classes in photography, history, and tree identification for homeschool groups. One class involved the history of boats. We explored our nature trails and a Pollinator Trail. We led a field trip to Pen Park where we scouted the Rivanna River and explored the burial places of the enslaved that were recently discovered on the outside of the wall of an 18th century cemetery. Also in the summer, we were invited by the Freedom School to make an in-person presentation to elementary and middle school students at the schools summer home at the Darden School of Business. They asked us to present on freedom, global warming, the watershed, and literacy. We used an African recipe to tell a story of enslavement and freedom along the African East Coast. In the fall we collaborated with Piedmont Virginia Community College students to produce an installation at the annual Let There Be Light event. The installation was based on aquatic life in the Rivanna River. The installation, which was interactive, was visited by area children, including children from the Boys and Girls Club. Over 1000 people attended the event. Throughout the fall, we continued with our small to medium field trip programs. For adults, we ran special tours and offered Zoom presentations, including one on the Keck statue. For the Rutherford Hayes Museum in Ohio, we ran a presentation on Zoom on the book Undaunted Courage. We began writing articles for Words from Your Watershed, the Thomas Jefferson Planning Districts newsletter, distributed to five counties, on watershed issues. We reported on the flora and fauna at the Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center. The newsletter is part of the Rivanna River Basin Commissions efforts. We also reported on the progress of the Exploratory Centers watershed mapping project using photographs, text, and writings of area schoolchildren to document the Rivanna River watershed. |
