| FORM 990 | HISTORY OF THE JACKSON HOLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND MUSEUM THE JACKSON HOLE MUSEUM WAS FOUNDED IN 1958 BY LOCAL ARCHAEOLOGIST AND COLLECTOR, W.C. SLIM LAWRENCE AND BUSINESSMAN, HOMER RICHARDS. IN 1965, THE TETON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY FORMED TO COLLECT AND PRESERVE ARCHIVAL MATERIALS SUCH AS HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS, BOOKS, FILM, NEWSPAPERS, ORAL HISTORIES, AND PHOTOGRAPHS. THE TWO MERGED IN 1989 TO CREATE A UNIFIED CULTURAL RESOURCES 501(C)3 MANAGED BY A BOARD OF DIRECTORS. OVER THE LAST 65 YEARS, THE JACKSON HOLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM (JHHSM) HAS GROWN TO INCLUDE EXTENSIVE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, SOPHISTICATED EXHIBITS, PARTNERSHIPS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY, AND IMPROVED ACCESS TO ITS RESEARCH RESOURCES. MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE DIGITIZING A MAJORITY OF THE COLLECTION AND INTEGRATING THE COLLECTION INTO A DIGITAL DATABASE, PRESERVING PAPER-BASED RECORDS IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED RESEARCH CENTER OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, ESTABLISHING A ROTATING COMMUNITY-CURATED EXHIBIT SPACE, GROWING EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH INCLUDING AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING, SUMMER CAMPS, AND HISTORIC DOWNTOWN WALKING TOURS, IMPROVING OUR ONLINE PRESENCE WITH DIGITAL EXHIBITS AND TEACHER RESOURCES, INVENTORYING, MOVING, AND REHOUSING THE COLLECTION IN A NEW STORAGE FACILITY, AND PARTICIPATING IN THE SAVE THE BLOCK EFFORT TO PERMANENTLY PRESERVE AN IMPORTANT HISTORIC AREA IN JACKSON WHILE CREATING A PERMANENT HOME FOR THE JHHSM. |
