OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Luciadagen: Historic Christian celebration of third century Christian Lucia who used her dowry money to purchase food for the hungry people of Sicily. As a Christian in the third century under Roman Law, she was considered a witch, trial held, found guilty, and burned at the stake December 13. It became her Saint Day to Christians. In Latin, her name derives from the word LIGHT celebrated December 13 in Sweden it is dark most of the day, her actions bring light to a dark world. It is the beginning of the Christmas Holidays in Scandinavian countries. The event is a free open to the public worship service. Lucia Dagen directly supports our purpose to Preserve Present and Promote Swedish Immigrant Heritage. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: Classses: These relate to artistic, music, language, literature and seasonal events in the Swedish culture. There is a fee charged to cover instructors, materials, and supplies. Any profit goes to the general fund usage. These classes directly support our purpose to Preserve Present and Promote Swedish Immigrant Heritage. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: Children's Programs: The content and goal of the classes is to teach about Swedish culture, immigration, and Minnesota/local history around the time of Swedish immigration in the mid-to late-1800s. This is done through instruction and hands-on activities using the museum?s buildings, artifacts, and landscape (e.g., restored prairie, pond, trees, flowers). Gammelgarden's programs provide for children with special-, emotional-, sensory-, and ADA-needs. Fees charged cover instructor fees and supplies. These programs support Gammelgarden's mission of preserving, presenting, and promoting Swedish immigrant heritage and history. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: Butik ("Gift Shop" in Swedish): Sells items relating to (1) Swedish cultural traditions and the role that Swedish immigration played in the settlement and creation of Minnesota culture and statehood; (2) literature for adults, teens, and children; (3) Scandinavian and Minnesotan cookbooks; (4) history (Swedish, immigration, Minnesota, local); (4) Swedish holiday and seasonal cultural event decorations and accessories; (5) clothing; (6) household items (textiles, linens, ceramics, Dala horses); greeting cards (Swedish styles/themes); (7) puzzles (Swedish styles/themes); (8) jewelry; and (9) food (imported from Sweden and made in Minnesota). | Form 990 Part III Line 4d | The museum's main programs include: 1. Major community events focused on Swedish music, dance, folk dress, and culture; and immigrant and early-settler experiences. These annual events include: a. Vinterfest, this free winter festival celebrates Scandinavian heritage and winter traditions; and offers a variety of activities and attractions for local residents and visitors. b. Season Opening Day, the first day of the museum season which focuses hands-on activities related to early-immigrant life in Scandia and Minnesota; and features exhibits and displays throughout the historical buildings and visitor center. c. Midsommardagen, a free community event that focuses on the Scandinavians' celebration of the Summer Solstice. At this event, many guests wear folk outfits reflecting the Swedish province where their ancestors lived. Guests of all ages do hands-on crafts activities related to Midsommardagen. Folk music, dance, and singing done by local Swedish performance groups and visitors make up the afternoon program. d. Spelmansstamman, this free event features Scandinavian musicians, dancers, and artists. During 2023, a Swedish-Ojibwe speaker and Ojibwe musician did a presentation at the event, and hands-on Swedish and Ojibwe art activities were offered for people of all ages. e. Luciadagen, this annual event occurs in December and features a program, singing, and message in Swedish. Following the program, there is a light breakfast featuring Swedish food and beverages. f. Annie's Jul-theme Coffee Parties, these events, which are held on the first three Saturdays of December, celebrate the traditional Swedish three-course coffee party. The fee for the coffee parties help generate general operating funds. 2. Art exhibits that feature the work of professional artists throughout the United States, and people of all ages and artistic abilities for community art shows. 3. Classes and workshops related to the arts, crafts, environment, heritage gardening, agriculture, language, and holidays related to Sweden and early immigrants/settlers. There is a fee charged to pay for the instructor's time and supplies. Any profit is deposited into the general operating fund. 4. Displays of historical cultural artifacts that are collected and preserved for current and future generations to learn about and see. 5. Informal gatherings featuring local musicians. 6. Educational field trips for school groups and tours for the public. These experiences bring students and the public through the historical buildings to provide a glimpse into the lives of the early immigrants. Afterwards, visitors view the exhibits and displays in the visitor center, and shop in the gift shop. |
