We are also open on Sunday and we have a Sunday Church Service at Noon for the homeless or hungry and then a Free Lunch at 1 PM every Sunday. Our location has a lot of visibility. We are well known in our Georgetown community. We are close to the local psychiatric hospital, the Federally Qualified Health Center, the nearby state prison and the local State Service Center. We see a lot of poverty and despair and our local grassroots volunteer team serves on the front lines of untreated mental illness, hunger, homelessness, loneliness, unemployment, severe addiction. We focus our attention on those who live outdoors in the Georgetown, DE area. We also serve motel moms and car dwellers who are the invisible homeless. Each month over 2023, we gave out over 2,500 Free Homemade meals every month. Each hot meal is home made and is sealed inside a white Styrofoam Clam Shell Container. With each hot meal, we also provide a Brown Bag packed with bottled water, apple sauce, crackers, peanut butter, jelly sandwich and other individually packaged snacks, some are homemade cookies or brownies when donated by our many volunteers. We have Free Dinners on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 pm to 5:30 PM, on Saturdays we have a Free Breakfast at 9 am and on Sundays we have a Free Lunch at 1 PM. In addition, we provide Free Clothing, Water Bottles, Free Coffee, Free Hot Cocoa, Free Wi-Fi, and a Free Mailing Address. Together, we have created a place of hope, kindness, light, compassion and connection for our guests each day. We welcome the poor, the sick, the downtrodden, the elderly, the car dwellers, the returning citizens from the Georgetown prison, the injured, the unemployed to our place the Office because we are open every day when the other churches are closed. As a first step, we provide immediate needs for our guests. We also find them a place to sleep at a local motel or within a group home setting. As a last resort, we help them to set up a sheltered place to sleep outside. We provide them with the necessary camping gear, provisions and supplies. As they attend our daily meals, we also help our guests to connect with addiction treatment/medical services that are in the community around us. We even invite other non-profits to our location so that they can do their outreach activities with our guests during our Free Meal times and during our Free Clothing events each day. Shepherds Office also helps our guests to find employment out in the community and also to apply for long-term housing. Over time, as our guests are encouraged to find their sobriety, stability, and mental health recovery. We won a Governors Volunteer Appreciation Award because of having a dedicated team of over 75 volunteers. They visit regularly. They volunteer diligently and consistently. We are happy that they chose our location and each serves with us for about 10 to 15 hours each week. Some of them travel by bus, so this is additional time and effort they dedicate. They are awesome people! We collaborate and team up with each other to find solutions to everyday problems related to poverty. They all jump right in and try to help out. Our volunteers are great role models for others because of their own lived experiences. They have a deep compassion for our many guests and they help them find their resilience, grit and strength while in the storms of life. Because of this, our team of volunteers have solid and practical ideas for helping our guests.
