ESTABLISHED IN THE 19TH CENTURY, THE UNITED ORDER OF TENTS ORIGINALLY PROVIDED AID TO THOSE ESCAPING SLAVERY VIA THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. NOW, OUR CURRENT MISSION IS TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY OUR ELDERLY NEIGHBORS. FOR MORE THAN 75 YEARS, THE WOMEN OF THE EASTERN DISTRICT TENTS HAVE BEEN QUIETLY FULFILLING THEIR MISSION TO FEED THE HUNGRY, TEND TO THE SICK, BURY THE DEAD, HELP RAISE CHILDREN AND CARE FOR THE ELDERLY HERE IN BROOKLYN. 0
2 OUR EASTERN DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS IS THE ONCE-OPULENT MANSION AT 87 MACDONOUGH STREET, WHICH HAS HOSTED MEETINGS, WEDDINGS, AND LUNCHEONS AND HAS BEEN A CENTER FOR MUTUAL AID SINCE THE TENTS BOUGHT IT IN 1945. THIS HISTORIC HOME WAS BUILT IN 1863, IS LISTED ON THE NEW YORK STATE AND NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, AND SITS IN STUYVESANT HEIGHTS, A HISTORIC DISTRICT. IT IS A BEACON OF HISTORY FOR THE TENTS AND THE COMMUNITY. ONCE THE HOME IS RENOVATED, WE HOPE TO ESTABLISH A PERMANENT EXHIBIT THAT CHRONICLES, PROMOTES, AND PRESERVES THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED ORDER OF TENTS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO BEDFORD STUYVESANT AND CENTRAL BROOKLYN.
