| Part I, Line 1 & Part III, Line 1 | Overview The American Museum of Natural History ("AMNHthe "Museum") is one of the largest and most complex natural history museums in the world. It is a unique and diverse scientific, educational and cultural organization that includes a research enterprise of approximately 168 full time scientists; the Richard Gilder Graduate School, which confers the Ph.D. in comparative biology and the Master of Arts in teaching, the only such free-standing degree granting programs in any museum in the U.S., collections of more than 30 million specimens and artifacts that constitute an invaluable record of life on earth; one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, more than 40 permanent exhibition halls, special exhibition galleries which display award-winning exhibitions, as well as the rose center for earth and space, which houses the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium where planetarium shows are shown. The Museum offers extensive education programs for teachers, students, families and the general public onsite and online. It also has a major digital enterprise and online presence, and typically distributes its scientific and educational content, special exhibitions and planetarium shows to venues in approximately 20 countries. The Museum was founded in 1869 by a special act of the legislature of the state of New York and is chartered as an educational institution with its scientific research, educational programs and exhibitions under the auspices of the board of regents of the state of New York. AMNH's mission, which reflects a close integration of science and education, is "to discover, interpret and disseminate -- through scientific research and education - knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe." The Museum is located within the approximately 18 acre Theodore Roosevelt Park, across from Central Park in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. New York City is the largest city in the United States with a diverse population of 8.3 million and one of the highest tourism volumes in the United States, with approximately 56.7 million foreign and domestic tourists in CY22. Tourism is now rebounding, with the New York City tourism destination marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau estimating 63.3 million visitors in CY23 and anticipating surpassing pre-pandemic levels in CY24. The areas of the Museum open to the public include more than 40 permanent exhibition halls, including the Rose Center for Earth and Space which houses the Hayden Planetarium, as well as theaters for symposia and public programs, special exhibition galleries, and the library. Other parts of the premises house research laboratories, collections, classrooms, administrative offices, and the Richard Gilder Graduate School. AMNH is publicly supported with operating and capital funds from the City of New York and by grants from the city, state, and federal governments. Additional support comes from individual donations, grants from foundations and corporations, as well as admissions revenue, endowment yield, and ancillary activities. Construction of the new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation (the "Gilder Center project") which broke ground in June 2019, continued and culminated in the building's public opening on May 4, 2023. The project included a five-story, approximately 190,000-gross-square-foot addition, approximately 40,000 gross square feet of renovations to existing space, and alterations to an approximately 75,000-square-foot adjacent area of Theodore Roosevelt Park. The Gilder Center features new exhibition galleries, learning spaces and classrooms with state-of-the-art technology, new storage facilities for the Museum's world-class scientific collections, new laboratories and scientific facilities, a library and learning center, and a range of new amenities for visitors. The Gilder Center also added some 30 connections among 10 existing Museum buildings, creating a continuous campus that resolves bottlenecks and improves the flow of visitors and staff. Research AMNH scientific research is carried out with a full-time scientific staff of approximately 168 who work in the biological sciences, paleontology, astrophysics, earth and planetary sciences, and anthropology. AMNH scientists typically conduct more than 100 expeditions each year (86 expeditions were conducted in FY23) around the world and publish their research in peer-reviewed journals. The science effort is led currently by 31 tenured or tenure track curators whose research publications have attracted over 250,000 citations. The average citation index (h-index) for senior curators is over 50, regarded as an indication of "outstanding" impact characteristic of only top research institutions. Research facilities utilized by AMNH include the Museum's collections, a natural history library and state-of-the-art laboratories as well as other research facilities off site which are available through university consortia and other partnerships in which AMNH participates. AMNH also owns over 100 acres in the Chiricahua Mountains in southeastern Arizona with research laboratories and temporary housing for researchers, as well as the 17-acre great gull island, a conservation area located at the eastern end of long island sound in New York state. The work of scientists and others at the Museum is partially funded by federal agencies including the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. AMNH'S cross-disciplinary research centers include an institute for comparative genomics ("the institute"), which advances basic research in molecular biology. The institute includes a number of science facilities including three genomics laboratories; a laboratory for the study of ancient DNA and Paleoproteomics; the Monell collection for molecular and microbial research (a frozen tissue repository of DNA and tissue specimens); and a high-performance computing facility. It also supports the Museum's comparative genomics research program and education laboratory. The genomics research programs are complemented by the efforts of Museum scientists in phenomics research- the investigation of cell and tissue structure, anatomy, physiology and other complex features of organisms and species that are influenced by genes. Thus, the Museum's research mission in comparative biology embraces both genomics and phenomics. Research programs in comparative biology are complemented by educational programs and facilities, including an education laboratory, that help convey critical scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Another research program is the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC), which surveys and studies biological diversity, provides educational and training programs and strives to mitigate threats to the earth's ecosystems. The CBC is currently leading projects in Colombia and Vietnam and has worked in Solomon Islands, American Samoa, Cuba, Bolivia, Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, Madagascar, Mongolia, Peru and the Bahamas in the past to integrate multidisciplinary research and the Museum's collections and technology for training and collaborative problem solving. CBC is also working to develop tools to support the professionalization of the global protected area workforce and to incorporate indigenous and local knowledge into biodiversity assessments. In the fall of 2018, the Museum entered into a collaboration with the Flatiron Institute Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA). One of the Museum's astrophysics curators were jointly supported by this program in FY23. The CCA fosters the work of a large team of computational astrophysicists and provides the high -performance computing facility for the big data analyses required in this field. Collections and Library The Museum's collections total more than 30 million specimens and artifacts and are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The collections constitute an invaluable record of life on earth and are maintained to facilitate the study and understanding of 4.5 billion years of change in Earth's geology, climate, and the 3.5-billion-year history of its habitats and life forms. In FY23, the collections grew by more than 140,000 new specimens and objects. Newer collections and facilities include the Museum's frozen tissue collection of DNA with more than 127,000 tissue samples that form a repository for research at AMNH and other institutions. Other newer forms of collections include large scientific digital databases of genomic and astrophysical data. The collections and research assets are enriched by continued exploration of such diverse areas as Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Belize, Democratic Republic of Congo, Greece, Slovenia, Spain, Bulgaria, Somalia, and many others. |
| Part I, Line 1 & Part III, Line 1 (Continued) | AMNH provides research material to other institutions, typically lending tens of thousands of specimens each year (786 loans of 13,160 specimens in FY23) and with outstanding loans of hundreds of thousands of specimens at any given time. Its collections are also made available for study on site to research scientists and students. A total of 708 researchers visited the collections in FY23. The American Museum of Natural History was established as a natural history museum and library in 1869. Since that time, the library has grown into one of the largest natural history libraries in the world, with a collection that is rich in retrospective materials and hard to find materials. The library's holdings comprise a research collection with topics that span the full range of the natural sciences (excluding botany), a rich archival collection of documents, photography, moving images, art and memorabilia, documenting the history of the Museum, its scientists and staff, scientific expeditions and research, Museum exhibitions, educational offerings, and the library's extensive rare book collection of over 15,000 volumes, some dating to the 15th century. In 2020 the library began work on a major, multi-year grant to reorganize its rich archives and to implement a digital asset management system to increase accessibility to its collections of digital and digitized assets. The library's primary function is to serve and support the work of the Museum staff of scientists, educators, and exhibit developers; however, it also serves local students, faculty, researchers, and the general public, as well as scholars nationally and around the world. Education In 2006, the New York State Board of Regents authorized the Museum's Richard Gilder Graduate School. Then, in 2009 the Board of Regents selected AMNH to pilot a Master of Arts in Teaching program for k-12 science teachers with conferral of the degree by the Board of Regents, the first freestanding master's degree program offered by a U.S. museum to prepare science teachers. In June 2015, the Regents approved an amendment of the AMNH charter, authorizing AMNH itself to confer the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching. The museum successfully completed the Regents' initial five-year pilot program in August 2016 at which point, as noted above, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program officially moved under the governance of the Richard Gilder Graduate school along with the Ph.D. program. Now in its twelfth year, the innovative program has received full accreditation and enjoys a nearly 100 percent job placement rate. As of the close of FY23, the MAT Earth Science Residency program (previously known as the Master of Arts in Teaching program) has graduated 152 teachers; more than 14,000 students are being taught annually by graduates of the program, mainly in high-needs schools in New York. Teacher retention exceeds national averages, particularly for those teaching in high-needs schools. To further advance training of the next generation of scientists, RGGS also has a collaborative doctoral student training program in partnership with five universities: the City University of New York, Cornell University, Columbia University, New York University, and Stony Brook University, and maintains an active post-doctoral program. It also offers two longstanding NSF-supported undergraduate training programs, which provide a select group of undergraduate students with intensive summer research experience in such subjects as evolutionary biology, earth and planetary sciences, and astrophysics. Education programs for teachers and the public that had transitioned to remote learning in response to the Covid-19 pandemic have all returned onsite. For all programs, we continued to use online and blended learning as appropriate. Notable offerings, both onsite and online this year, included the following programs. -For K-12 teachers, the Museum has extensive professional development programs that served nearly over 3,800 educators onsite and online in FY23 through a rich array of offerings that are aligned with current curricular standards and designed to deepen experience with scientific practices, offer classroom connections, and provide access to Museum resources. Many of the courses offered to teachers are available for graduate credit, furthering the pursuit of advanced degrees in science education through the City University of New York, Bank Street College, and other universities and educational institutions. In addition, while school visits restarted in a limited capacity in FY22, as the Museum was still closed Mondays and Tuesdays, early in FY23 the Museum restarted seven-day operation and school groups were again able to visit Monday through Friday. 209,773 students and teachers visited the Museum as part of organized school or camp groups. -Seminars on science is the Museum's flagship online education program for K-12 teachers, offering graduate level online courses in earth science, life, and physical sciences, with academic credit available through partner universities. In FY23, seminars on science served a total of 1,153 students in 54 course sections. -Through the Coursera platform, the Museum offers free massive online open courses (moocs) designed for both educators and general audiences. The Museum's offerings on Coursera garnered 27,539 enrollments in FY23. -Ology, the Museum's award-winning science website for children, garnered over 4.5 million usage sessions in FY23, and its corresponding iPad app was downloaded over 43,000 times. The app encompasses more than 35 educational games, videos, and articles covering scientific fields from archaeology to zoology. It can also be used offline, making it an important resource for children without reliable internet access. -Among the Museum's signature education programs for middle school students and their teachers is the Urban Advantage initiative, which is now in its 20th year. Urban Advantage is a middle school science enrichment program developed by the Museum with the NYC Department of Education and operated by the Museum and seven other science institutions of New York City. In FY23, Urban Advantage reached about 83,000 middle school students and 874 teachers - including 720 continuing teachers - in 270 middle schools across all five boroughs across New York City. Urban Advantage has also expanded into elementary schools and reached an additional 9,700 students in grades 3-5 in FY23. -Each year, the Museum's Science and Research Mentoring program (SRMP) provides 60 under-resourced high school students with a year of focused training in science practices and laboratory skills, as well as the invaluable opportunity to pursue research projects under the mentorship of a museum scientist. Since its launch in 2009, 905 students have graduated from the program, many of whom have gone on to pursue science in college and in their careers. The Museum also leads the New York City Science Research Mentoring Consortium, in collaboration with local cultural institutions, museums, universities, and hospitals committed to providing mentored research experiences across the city. The consortium now includes 28 partner sites--including the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, the NOAA Center for Remote Sensing and Earth Systems (CREST) at City College, and Wave Hill. In June 2023, the Museum hosted the 10th annual student research colloquium in person; 84 students from SRMP and five other consortium partners presented their research and conducted live Q&A sessions with attendees and other students. The museum also produces and distributes curricula, lesson plans, and resource materials for classroom use, as well as for use in libraries and community organizations, to support science teaching and learning in New York City. These materials are widely available online to communities throughout the state of New York, the U.S., and the world, through the Museum's continued investment in digital media. The Museum further extends the reach of its educational programs through after-hours public programs, including the monthly SciCaf series, which features popular presentations by Museum curators, and the annual Isaac Asimov debate. |
| Part I, Line 1 & Part III, Line 1 (Continued) | Exhibition The Museum creates and mounts its award-winning exhibitions, science video bulletin displays, and planetarium shows for display at AMNH and distribution to museums, science centers, and planetariums in numerous venues in approximately 20 countries. The Okavango blue diamond (November 9, 2021 - July 31, 2022) is a 20.46 carat, brilliant cut, type iib "fancy blue" spectacular diamond from the Orapa mine in Botswana. This dazzling gem had never before been exhibited in the United States and was first unveiled to the public in 2019. The exhibition also featured close to 1000 small diamonds also from Botswana, ranging from common industrial rough diamonds to cut gemstones. Sharks (December 15, 2021 - September 4, 2023) reveals the incredible diversity and long evolutionary history of sharks and their close relatives. People have long been fascinated by sharks. They conjure up a myriad of images, from terrifying man-eaters, such as the great white or tiger shark, to gentle filter-feeding giants like the whale shark and basking shark. This exhibition helps visitors uncover the myriad types of sharks in our oceans with a spectacular "parade" of sharks that extends the length of the gallery. It highlights current Museum research and allows visitors to explore anatomy, biology and behavior through encounters with familiar favorites including hammerheads and great white sharks, together with today's strange, little-known sharks and rays. The parade also showcases models of extinct species like the giant megalodon, alongside fossils from the AMNH collections, helping visitors peek into the early origins of sharks. The exhibition is further brought to life with digital media, including video footage, an interactive that challenges visitors to hunt like a hammerhead, and a projection screen that allows visitors to "be" a shark. Finally, Sharks delves into serious conservation issues including overfishing and habitat destruction. In reality, these magnificent creatures pose few threats to people--but we are a serious threat to them. Worlds Beyond Earth, having premiered in January 2020, this 25-minute digital space show continued its run in the Hayden Planetarium through FY23. Narrated by Lupita Nyong'o, 'worlds beyond earth' visualizes the dynamic worlds that share our solar system and provides vital context for understanding the unique conditions that make life on earth possible. Extinct and Endangered: Insects in Peril (June 22, 2022 - TBD) The American Museum of Natural History and award-winning photographer Levon Biss collaborated on this project to call attention to the critical issue of insect decline on a global level. Organized chiefly by Dr. David Grimaldi, curator for amber, diptera, isoptera, lepidoptera and minor holometabolous orders, division of invertebrate zoology, in collaboration with all other current AMNH entomology curators, extinct and endangered consists of an exhibition of stunning large-scale insect photographs as well as a companion book, a dynamic website and a "making of" video. The project features specimens from the vast AMNH insect collections. The exhibition will travel to other venues around the world after its premiere at the AMNH. Garden of Green: Exquisite Jewelry from the Collection of Van Cleef & Arpels(June 10, 2023 - Jan 31, 2024) in The Melissa and Keith Meister Gallery, Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals. This exhibition displays 44 pieces of jewelry-32 of which were on display for the first time in the U.S-from the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection. Garden of Green features a variety of ornamental gemstones in all shades of green, including peridot, chrysoprase, malachite and more, in addition to jade and emerald. A preview of the exhibit featuring two stunning emerald necklaces-one with a unique gradation of 16 emerald-cut Zambian emeralds-and an emerald bracelet opened in the gallery on March 7, 2023. Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation (May 4, 2023) opened with several new permanent exhibition galleries: -The Susan and Peter J. Solomon Family Insectarium features 18 live species of insects, specimens, touch models and digital interactives that allow visitors to explore the roles insects play in the well-being of ecosystems, agriculture and human health. -The Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium is open year-round and features 80 species of live butterflies. -The Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Collections Core and the Macaulay Family Foundation Collection Galleries display over 3,000 objects from the Museum's collection across three floors of exhibits. The specimens and artifacts on display, along with associated digital interactives, reveal how researchers use our collections to answer questions about the universe and life on our planet. -The Invisible Worlds Experience is an immersive and interactive science-visualization experience that reveals how all of life is connected; it also includes the Susan S. and Kenneth L. Wallach Gallery with digital interactives and live animals. -The David S. and Ruth L. Gottesman Research Library features a gallery that showcases holdings from the Library's Rare Book Collection and other special collections. The first exhibition, What's in a Name? explores how and why scientific names are assigned through rare books and art. In addition to the exhibitions on display at the museum listed above, exhibitions traveling to other venues or available for travel included the following: -The nature of color explored the many ways that color informs and enriches our lives. -T. rex: The Ultimate Predator explores the iconic tyrannosaurus rex and other members of this large, ancient and fearsome family. -Unseen oceans explores the vast, dynamic, and still-mysterious world ocean from a variety of perspectives. -Our senses explores how we use our sense organs to gather up vital information-and more importantly, how our brains interpret sensory data and enable us to perceive the world around us. -Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids traces the cultural and natural history roots of the world's most captivating mythological creatures. -Giants, Dragons, and Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures is an adapted, small-scale (2,000 square foot) version of the museum's full-scale exhibition Mythic Creatures, suitable for travel to venues with smaller exhibition galleries and budgets. -The Secret World Inside You explores the rapidly evolving science that is revealing complexities of the human microbiome and redefining our notions of human health. -Inside You, a panel version of the popular traveling exhibition, introduces visitors to the idea that our bodies are home to approximately 100 trillion bacteria living inside us and on us-along with even more viruses and other microorganisms. -Cuba! is a bilingual exhibition about the Caribbean Island nation. It highlights the country's vibrant culture as well as its extraordinary biodiversity across its remote forests, mysterious caves, expansive wetlands and dazzling reefs. -Nature's Superheroes: Life at the Limits reveals a glimpse of the breathtaking diversity of the natural world and the power of natural selection to shape exceptional responses to the challenges, and opportunities, of life on earth. -Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs explores the ancient, winged reptiles known as pterosaurs and what incredible new discoveries are revealing about this extraordinary group of animals. -The Power of Poison explores poison's roles in nature, myth, and human health-as a defense against predators, a source of strength, or a lethal weapon-turned-lifesaving treatment. -Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence takes visitors to such fascinating places as the far depths of the ocean, explains why and how certain animals create "living light", and helps us all better understand the vast and glorious ecosystem of which we are a part. -World's Largest Dinosaurs reveals how a uniquely super-sized group of dinosaurs - the long-necked and long-tailed sauropods - lived, breathed, ate, moved, and survived by illuminating how size and scale related to basic biological functions. -Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas is an adapted, small-scale (1,500 sq. ft.) version of the museum's full-scale exhibition Dinosaurs, Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries, suitable for travel to venues with smaller exhibition galleries and budgets. -Opulent Oceans was inspired by the book Opulent Oceans: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History library, by Dr. Melanie L.J. Stiassny, the Axelrod research curator and curator in the department of ichthyology. The exhibition includes 46 striking, large-format reproductions from 32 rare and beautifully illustrated scientific works from the museum's library. |
| Part I, Line 1 & Part III, Line 1 (Continued) | -Picturing Science: Museum Scientists and Imaging Technologies is an exhibition with more than 20 sets of images are displayed in large format, giving visitors a sense of the wide range of research topics under investigation at AMNH as well as the various optical tools in use here. -Natural Histories was inspired by the book Natural Histories: Extraordinary Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History library, published in October 2012, by Thomas Baione, Harold Boeschenstein director, department of library services. This exhibition includes 50 striking, large-format reproductions from more than 25 rare and beautifully illustrated scientific works from the museum library's rare book collection. -The Hidden Beauty of Seeds and Fruits: 81 historical seed and fruit specimens from the royal botanic gardens in Edinburgh were photographed in painstaking detail for this panel exhibition, highlighting striking evolutionary adaptations and stories. The images allow the audience to appreciate and study these tiny specimens in levels of detail normally only available with the use of microscopes. -Microsculpture presents a new perspective on insects, enabling audiences to study and appreciate the hidden details of the insect world in a unique and engaging way. Created by photographer Levon Biss, it showcases the insect collection of the oxford university museum of natural history in striking high-resolution detail. AMNH space shows licensed at other venues in FY23 included: -Passport to the Universe: narrated by Tom Hanks, this inaugural show produced for the opening of the rose center communicates our place in the universe. New visuals were produced in 2017, updating this popular show using the latest techniques in data visualization. - Cosmic Collision: narrated by Robert Redford, this space show delves into the destructive but beautiful collisions that fuel our universe. - Journey to the Stars: launches visitors through space and time to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky, including our own sun. - Dark Universe: narrated by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, it celebrates the pivotal discoveries that have led us to greater knowledge of the structure and history of the universe and our place within it. - Worlds Beyond Earth: narrated by Lupita Nyong'o, it tells the story of the dynamic worlds that share our solar system and the unique conditions that make life on earth possible. Digital Media/Communications The Museum maintains a dynamic digital media presence, anchored by the amnh.org website, which offers online ticketing and visitor information; extensive coverage of and resources for the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions; information about the Museum's educational offerings, including programs for students beginning in pre-school through graduate school, and resources and professional development for teachers; information about the Museum's research programs and scientific collections; and more. In addition, the Museum is active on several social media platforms, including X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok, as well as YouTube, to engage directly with the public. In FY23, amnh.org had 16 million unique visitors, up from 14 million in FY22, and sessions rose to 22 million, up from 19 million. Increases in online engagement were due to promotional efforts surrounding the opening of the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Research, and Education, which opened May 4, 2023, and its various new exhibition components, including the Invisible Worlds immersive experience, the Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium, the Solomon Family Insectarium, and others. Another driver for web traffic in FY23 was the expansion of online ticketing to include purchasing pay-what-you-wish tickets (previously available only on-site), supported by promotional efforts to encourage greater uptake of online ticket purchasing for all Museum visits. Pages that include visitor information, including the Plan Your Visit section, increased to 2.7 million sessions, up 44% from 1.9 million sessions in FY22. Interest in the Museum's digital resources and educational offerings remained strong and continued to grow throughout FY23. Sessions to OLogy, the Museum's website for kids, rose to 4.7 million in FY23, up from 4.5 million in FY22. A selection of OLogy activities can also be accessed on an iPad app released by the museum in late FY20, which continues to be downloaded, with more than 73,000 downloads in FY23, up from 57,000 in FY22, leading to nearly 250,000 lifetime downloads. |
