| PART XI, LINE 9 | PROGRAM DESCRIPTION (CONTINUED) REGARDLESS OF THE INSECURITY, HRI MAINTAINED A STRONG PRESENCE ON THE GROUND, WORKING WITH EXTREMELY VULNERABLE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, INCLUDING LARGE GROUPS OF WOMEN, CHILDREN AND ELDERLY DISPLACED FROM THEIR HOMES DUE TO GANG VIOLENCE. EVEN AS OTHER ORGANIZATIONS CONTINUED TO WITHDRAW FROM HAITI DUE TO THE GROWING INSTABILITY AND VIOLENCE, HRI CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR PROGRAMS TO SERVE THOSE IN NEED. EXTREME POVERTY LEADS TO PAINFUL HUNGER, PREVENTABLE ILLNESS, POOR ACCESS TO BASIC SERVICES, LACK OF EDUCATION, AND THE INABILITY TO GENERATE SUFFICIENT INCOME TO SUPPORT A FAMILY. THROUGHOUT 2023, HRI STROVE TO IGNITE THE POWER AND STRENGTHS OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL WE SERVED TO GIVE EACH THE HAND UP THEY NEEDED TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY, AND TO BECOME SELF-RELIANT. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMMING FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS, INCOME GENERATION AND MICRO-ENTERPRISE TRAINING AND PROJECTS, AND ACCESS TO VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL TRAINING BY YOUTH AND WOMEN HEADED HOUSEHOLDS. SIMULTANEOUSLY, HRI ENSURED THAT NO CHILD IN OUR PROGRAMS WENT HUNGRY OR STRUGGLED TO ACCESS NUTRITIOUS FOOD DUE TO POLITICAL INSTABILITY, OR ANY OTHER NATURAL OR MANMADE DISASTER. |
| OTHER | PROGRAM DESCRIPTION IN 2023, HRI SERVED 16,152 PEOPLE INCLUDING 9,357 CHILDREN AND 6,795 ADULTS THROUGH ALL OUR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. THIS INCLUDED AN EXPANSION OF OUR WORK IN HAITI TO INCLUDE A FOCUS ON ASSISTING INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE LIVING IN SQUALID, MAKESHIFT CAMPS. WE PARTNERED WITH ST. CATHERINES HOSPITAL MOBILE CLINIC AND PROVIDED AN ARRAY OF MEDICAL SERVICES, MEDICINES, HYGIENE PRODUCTS, AND CHOLERA PREVENTION TOOLS AND TRAINING. HRI WAS ALSO ABLE TO PARTNER WITH SEVERAL LOCAL PUBLIC CLINICS AND HOSPITALS IN THE PROVISION OF CRITICALLY NEEDED MEDICINES, MEDICAL SUPPLIES, MICRONUTRIENTS, MULTI-VITAMINS, DEWORMING TABLETS AND MUCH MORE. ADDITIONALLY, TRUE TO OUR MISSION, HRI PROVIDED FOOD AND OTHER NECESSITIES TO EXTREMELY VULNERABLE CHILDREN AND WOMEN THROUGH THESE INITIATIVES AND OUR FUNDRAISING PLATFORMS. WE CONTINUED OUR WORK WITH 13 ORPHANAGES IN HAITI IN 2023, PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS FOOD, MEDICAL SERVICES AND ASSISTED IN MEETING OTHER NEEDS, I.E. WATER, PROPANE FOR COOKING, MEDICINES AND MORE, AS NEEDED. IN GUATEMALA, HRI CONTINUED TO ESTABLISH PROGRAMMING IN THE WESTERN HIGHLANDS OF THE COUNTRY, A LARGELY INDIGENOUS REGION WITH SIGNIFICANT LEVELS OF POVERTY AND EXTREME HUNGER AND MALNUTRITION, PARTICULARLY AMONG CHILDREN. HRI CONTINUED TO ADAPT AND EXPAND OUR PROGRAMS TO MEET GROWING NEEDS WITH LONG-TERM, SUSTAINABLE RESPONSES TO THE DAILY STRUGGLES OF VULNERABLE CHILDREN, WOMEN, AND FAMILIES. IN THE SOUTHERN DEPARTMENT OF SANTA ROSA, HRI CONTINUED TO PROVIDE A NUTRITIOUS BREAKFAST PROGRAM TO HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN ATTENDING THREE SCHOOLS. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REACHED AN INCREDIBLE 94 AND NEARLY ALL THE STUDENTS EXCELLED ACADEMICALLY THROUGH THE YEAR. THIS PROGRAM ONCE AGAIN DEMONSTRATES THE VALUE OF A GOOD BREAKFAST BEFORE SCHOOL. THE SECURITY SITUATION IN HAITI CONTINUED TO DETERIORATE IN 2023 WITH RAMPANT GANG VIOLENCE, DAILY KIDNAPPINGS, AND BLOCKED NEIGHBORHOODS. |
