| FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM'S MISSION IS TO SHARE A DIVERSITY OF ART AND EXPERIENCES THAT SPARK REFLECTION, INSPIRATION, AND CONNECTION WITHIN OUR NEWPORT COMMUNITY AND BEYOND. THE MUSEUM WAS FOUNDED IN 1912 ON THE BELIEF THAT ARTS AND CULTURE HAVE THE POWER TO BRING DIVERSE GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS TOGETHER, WHICH ULTIMATELY PROMOTES CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND STRENGTHENS THE SOCIAL FABRIC OF OUR COMMUNITIES. THIS CORE BELIEF CONTINUES TO GUIDE THE MUSEUM'S DIRECTION TODAY. MUSEUM OFFERINGS RANGE FROM EXHIBITIONS AND LECTURES TO ART CLASSES IN ITS MUSEUM SCHOOL AND ART TRIPS TO OTHER CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS. LOCATED ON 3-ACRES ALONG BEAUTIFUL BELLEVUE AVENUE IN NEWPORT, RI, THE MUSEUM'S GALLERIES ARE HOUSED IN TWO HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS AND FEATURE NOTABLE SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AS WELL AS SELECTIONS FROM ITS GROWING PERMANENT COLLECTION. THE COLLECTION CURRENTLY INCLUDES NEARLY 2,750 WORKS OF ART INCLUDING SCULPTURE, PAINTINGS, PRINTS, DRAWINGS, PHOTOGRAPHS, TEXTILES, AND GLASS ART DATING FROM THE MID-18TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT. MUSEUM STAFF AND TRUSTEES ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING A CULTURE OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESS, AND INCLUSION. THIS MEANS BUILDING A MORE VARIED AND INTEGRATED WORKPLACE AND BOARDROOM THAT IS REFLECTIVE OF THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE, PARTICIPATING IN IMPLICIT BIAS AWARENESS TRAINING, AND VIEWING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES THROUGH AN EQUITY LENS. OUR EXHIBITIONS AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS WILL CONTINUE TO PRESENT A BROAD REPRESENTATION OF IDEAS, IDENTITIES AND VOICES THAT ENCOURAGE RICH, OPEN AND RELEVANT DISCOURSE. CO-COLLABORATION WITH AN EXPANDED NETWORK OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS WILL CONTINUE TO ENHANCE OUR RELEVANCY. WE RECOGNIZE THE VALUE IN EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS FROM UNDER-REPRESENTED GROUPS TO CREATE, LEARN, TEACH, WORK, VOLUNTEER, VISIT, AND SHARE OUR MUSEUM WITH OTHERS. AND WE BELIEVE THE COLLECTIVE SUM OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES, LIFE EXPERIENCES, HISTORIES, KNOWLEDGE, SELF-EXPRESSION, AND TALENT THAT OUR STAFF, TRUSTEES AND AUDIENCES BRING TOGETHER WILL HELP TO ENSURE THAT THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM IS, AND WILL BE, A WELCOMING PLACE FOR EVERYONE. A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN WAS APPROVED AT THE SEPTEMBER, 2020 BOARD MEETING - INSIGHT 2020: A NEW DIRECTION FOR A NEW DECADE. THIS "REALISTICALLY" AMBITIOUS PLAN, DEVELOPED WITH COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDER INPUT, INCLUDES GOALS, STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING THEM, MEASUREMENTS OF SUCCESS, AND ASSIGNED ACCOUNTABILITY TEAMS FOR EACH GOAL. THE FIVE OVERARCHING GOALS ARE: -BE MORE RELEVANT TO THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE AND SEEK TO SERVE; -INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF OUR MUSEUM'S MISSION, OFFERINGS AND IMPACT; -STRATEGICALLY SHAPE, SHARE AND INTERPRET OUR COLLECTIONS AND EXHIBITIONS; -COMMIT TO PRACTICES THAT REINFORCE A CULTURE OF LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT; -BUILD CAPACITY TO ENSURE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. NEWPORT ART MUSEUM RECEIVED ITS REACCREDITATION FROM THE AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF MUSEUMS (AAM) IN JULY 2021, WHICH INDICATES NEWPORT ART MUSEUM ADHERES TO THE INDUSTRY'S HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE. OF THE NATION'S ESTIMATED 33,000 MUSEUMS ONLY 1,084 ARE AAM ACCREDITED. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REVIEWS AND APPROVES THE MUSEUM'S AUDITED FINANCIALS, STRATEGIC PLAN, AND ANNUAL OPERATING BUDGETS. BEST PRACTICES ARE FOLLOWED IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE MUSEUM'S GOVERNANCE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. |
| FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A | EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: "GEORGIA O'KEEFFE: 'THINGS I HAD NO WORDS FOR'" (JULY 16 - OCTOBER 16, 2022), WHICH FEATURED OIL PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, AND WATERCOLORS THAT CELEBRATED O'KEEFFE'S EXPLORATION OF ABSTRACTION, WHICH ESTABLISHED HER AS ONE OF THE FOUNDATIONAL AMERICAN MODERNISTS. POWERFUL, BOLD, COLORFUL, AND EVOCATIVE, O'KEEFFE'S ABSTRACTIONS REPRESENT HER UNIQUE STYLE AND APPROACH TO NATURE AND LANDSCAPE. THIS EXHIBITION MARKED THE SECOND SHOW OF GEORGIA O'KEEFFE'S WORK AT THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM. O'KEEFFE FIRST EXHIBITED HER WORK, WITH OTHER AMERICAN MODERN ARTISTS, IN 1938 AND ALONGSIDE AN EXHIBITION OF GERTRUDE VANDERBILT WHITNEY'S SCULPTURE. ON VIEW AT THE SAME TIME, "DONNA MARIA BRUTON: 'FROM SENSE TO SOUL'" SHOWCASED THE WORK OF ARTIST AND EDUCATOR, DONNA MARIA BRUTON WHO CREATED MANY EVOCATIVE WORKS OF ART FROM HER MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES. COMBINING AND COLLAGING CANVAS, BOARD, PAPER, AND PAINT, BRUTON CREATED COLORFUL AND TEXTURED DREAMSCAPES WHERE RECOGNIZABLE OBJECTS AND ABSTRACT FORMS COALESCE AND INTERMINGLE. FOCUSING ON A SELECTION OF BRUTON'S WORK FROM THE 1990S-2000S, WHICH INCLUDES OBJECTS FROM THE MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION AND LOANS, THIS EXHIBITION CELEBRATES BRUTON'S CAREER AND HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO AMERICAN ART. |
