This is a summary of a request for penalty abatement for the late filing of the 2023 and 2024 Forms 990-PF. In brief the delay was not due to willful neglect but was a result of reasonable cause. In December 2023 the trust was established with the intent to operate as a public charity. Following a conversation with an IRS staffer I mistakenly believed filing was not required until our reclassification was complete. This misunderstanding was compounded by a severe health decline from long-COVID which significantly impaired my capacity to manage administrative obligations. In an effort to continue working while remaining compliant with tax regulations as I understood them I pivoted my practice to a sole proprietorship. As soon as I realized my error I took immediate steps to file the overdue forms and ensure future compliance. I respectfully request that the penalties be abated.
