FORM 990-PF - PART VIII-A SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES THE ST. CATHERINE'S ISLAND FOUNDATION, INC.'S (SCIF) ACTIVITIES ARE CENTERED ON CONSERVATION, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, AND EDUCATION. THE ACTIVITIES ARE CONDUCTED FOR THE MOST PART ON ST. CATHERINES ISLAND (SCI), ONE OF GEORGIA'S MAJOR BARRIER ISLANDS, LOCATED 35 MILES SOUTH OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. SCI HAS NO COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OR LARGE RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITIES, AND IT IS USED FOR THE STUDY OF BARRIER ISLAND NATURAL HISTORY, WITH ITS NATURAL HABITATS BEING MANAGED AS HAVENS FOR ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SPECIES.AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (AMNH) ARCHEOLOGY: NATURAL HISTORY RESEARCH ON SCI INCLUDES BIO-DIVERSITY SURVEYS, STUDIES OF IMPORTANT FLORA AND FAUNA, AS WELL AS ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES OF PRE-COLUMBIAN AND POST CONTACT PERIOD AMERICAN INDIAN AND SPANISH SETTLEMENTS. THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES HAVE BEEN UNDER THE DIRECTION OF DR. DAVID H. THOMAS SINCE 1974. DR. THOMAS IS CURATOR OF NORTH AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY AT THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (AMNH). MORE THAN 30 BOOKS AND DOZENS OF SCIENTIFIC PAPERS ON THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF SCI HAVE BEEN WRITTEN AND EDITED BY DR. THOMAS AND HIS COLLEAGUES. CONSERVATION IS THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF AMNH ON SCI. AMNH CONTINUES TO MONITOR, DOCUMENT AND MITIGATE THE EROSION NEAR THE MISSION SITE (ONE THE MOST IMPORTANT POST CONTACT PERIOD ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN THE COUNTRY). AMNH'S WORK INVOLVES GROUND-TRUTHING SEVERAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL FEATURES VISIBLE IN THE CUTBANK.2024 MARKED THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ST CATHERINE'S ISLAND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT WITH THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. THROUGHOUT 2024, ARCHAEOLOGISTS FROM THE AMNH CONTINUED MONITORING THE SHORELINES OF ST. CATHERINES ISLAND TO DOCUMENT THE IMPACT AND EXTENT OF EROSION AND ITS EFFECT ON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES. IN ADDITION, THEY EXPANDED THE CENTER BLOCK EXCAVATION AT THE MUSGROVE SHELL RING, CONDUCTED A SHOVEL TEST PIT SURVEY AROUND THE MUSGROVE SHELL RING, PERFORMED SHELL DENSITY PROBING SURVEYS OF FOUR POTENTIAL REBURIAL LOCATIONS, HOSTED A TRIBAL VISIT TO THE ISLAND, AND PROCESSED ARCHAEOBOTANICAL SAMPLES. THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA JOINED AMNH IN MAY 2024 TO HOST A THREE-WEEK ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL TO TRAIN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN A VARIETY OF IMPORTANT ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD METHODS, INCLUDING SURVEY AND EXCAVATION. THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA HARGRETT LIBRARY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA LABORATORY OF ARCHAEOLOGY HAVE 2005-2015 ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS FROM THE ISLAND. THESE FACILITIES ARE CURATING SCI MATERIALS. SEA TURTLE PROGRAM: SCI MAINTAINS A HABITAT CONDUCIVE FOR LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES. SCIF CONTINUES TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL SEA TURTLE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FROM THE MONTH OF MAY THROUGH OCTOBER. THE INTERNS WORK WITH THE GA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES (DNR) AND THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, IN MONITORING AND PROTECTING THE NESTS OF ENDANGERED LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES, WHICH LAY THEIR EGGS IN THE SAND ON SCI'S BEACHES. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF SCIF AND WITH GA DNR TRAINING, THREE SEASONAL SEA TURTLE MONITORS CONTINUED THE SCI SEA TURTLE PROGRAM FOLLOWING GUIDELINES THAT WERE ADOPTED STATEWIDE AS A MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR SEA TURTLE SURVIVAL TITLED "A MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE PROTECTION OF NESTING LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES AND THEIR HABITAT IN GEORGIA". AGENCIES AND LANDOWNERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF EVERY BARRIER ISLAND IN GEORGIA HAVE ADOPTED IT. THE ISLAND ECOLOGY PROGRAM: A UNIVERSITY LEVEL INTERDISCIPLINARY SUMMER COURSE IN ECOLOGY FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IS HELD ANNUALLY ON SCI AND IS CONDUCTED DURING A SIX-WEEK PERIOD BY FACULTY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH IN COOPERATION WITH SCIF. DURING THE SUMMER OF 2024, THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH WAS ABLE TO HOLD ITS 37TH ISLAND ECOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL ON SCI. DURING THIS TIME THE STUDENTS WERE IMMERSED IN THE NATIVE FLORA AND FAUNA, WETLAND/MARSH AREAS AND THE FOREST SYSTEMS OF THE ISLAND. IN 2024, STUDENT PROJECTS WERE FOCUSED UPON WATER TABLE DYNAMICS ON THE BEACH AND WITHIN THE ISLAND'S CENTRAL DEPRESSION, AS WELL AS IMPROVING THE MARKERS USED FOR LONG-TERM EROSION MONITORING ALONG THE CUTBANKS OF THE WAMMASSEE CREEK NEAR THE MISSION ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE. STUDENTS WERE TAUGHT HOW TO CONDUCT REPLICATED SURVEYS OF BIRD ABUNDANCE AND DIVERSITY, LEARNED ABOUT PLANT ECOLOGY, WILDLIFE ECOLOGY AND LAND-USE HISTORY.GEORGIA SOUTHERN AQUAFER AND WATER TABLE RESEARCH: GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY WAS ON SCI IN 2024 CONTINUING ITS WORK INVESTIGATING AQUIFERS AND WATER TABLES UNDER THE ISLAND INCLUDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INHERITED GEOLOGIC FRAMEWORK AND SALTWATER INTRUSION. INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED FROM MONITORING DEVICES LOCATED IN SHALLOW WELLS DRILLED IN TRANSECT LINES FROM EAST TO WEST ACROSS SCI. THEY PLAN TO CONTINUE THEIR PROJECT OF DRILLING MORE SHALLOW WELLS AND PLACING MONITORING EQUIPMENT FOR FUTURE DATA COLLECTION. FISH SAMPLING: AUGUSTA STATE UNIVERSITY PARTICIPATE IN A FISH SAMPLING PROGRAM ON SCI. USING SEINE NETS, ASU COLLECTED AND RECORDED FISH SAMPLES FROM THE SHALLOW WATERS OFF SCI BEACHES. THIS PROGRAM PLANS TO CONTINUE TO EXPAND THEIR SAMPLING PROGRAM. THEY HAVE PROVIDED DECADES OF USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SEASONALITY AND FISHES IN THE WATERS AROUND SCI. BIRD COUNTS: IN 2024 THERE WERE MULTIPLE BIRD COUNTS ON SCI. THE MID-WINTER SHOREBIRD, SPRING MIGRATION, FALL MIGRATION COUNT AND CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT OCCUR MOST YEARS ON THE ISLAND. THE COASTAL DNR SCI BIRD PROGRAM ALONG WITH THE GEORGIA ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY PARTICIPATED IN CONDUCTING A COASTAL PLAIN WIDE SURVEY FOR ALL WADING BIRD SPECIES. THESE SURVEYS ARE CONDUCTED IN COOPERATION WITH THE GA DNR AND THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE. SCI LEMUR PROGRAM: THE ST. CATHERINES ISLAND LEMUR PROGRAM IN 2024 MAINTAINS A RESIDENCE OF 29 LEMURS, 3 VASECTOMIZED MALES AND 26 FEMALES. THIS PROGRAM THAT STARTED IN 1984 CONTINUES TO SUPPORT CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH OF THIS ENDANGERED SPECIES. SCIF PROVIDES HIGH QUALITY CARE, ENRICHMENT, AND MEDICAL AID TO THE LEMURS.SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE: SCIENTIFIC REVIEW, THE AWARD OF E.J. NOBLE FOUNDATION RESEARCH GRANTS, AND COORDINATING RESEARCH VISITS WITH SCI STAFF, ARE CONDUCTED BY SCIF IN CONJUNCTION WITH AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AND THE ST. CATHERINE'S ISLAND SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE. THE COMMITTEE IS MADE UP OF SCIENTISTS OF VARIED FIELDS WHOSE COMBINED RESEARCH EFFORTS ON SCI TOTAL OVER 182 YEARS. AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING THE YEAR, THE ST. CATHERINE'S ISLAND RESEARCH PROGRAM HOSTED SCIENTISTS WHO WORKED ON SCI IN A NUMBER OF DISCIPLINES, INCLUDING FISH SURVEYS, LEMON SHARK RESEARCH, BUTTERFLY SURVEYS, MONITORING SALTWATER INTRUSION INTO THE SURFACE AQUIFERS, GENETIC COMPOSITION, CONNECTIVITY AND DISEASE PREVALENCE OF WILD PIGS ON THE ISLAND, AND DISTRIBUTION OF SAND RESOURCES IN STATE WATERS TO ENHANCE COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN GEORGIA.
