FORM 990-PF: PART VIII-A SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES (CONT'D) THIS EVENT BROUGHT TOGETHER A LARGE GROUP OF THE WORLD'S LEADING NEUTROPHIL RESEARCHERS FOR A FOCUSED SCIENTIFIC GATHERING DEDICATED TO ADVANCING UNDERSTANDING OF NEUTROPHIL BIOLOGY. NEUTROPHILS ARE THE MOST ABUNDANT TYPE OF IMMUNE CELL IN THE HUMAN BODY AND PLAY AN ESSENTIAL ROLE IN INFLAMMATION, INFECTION CONTROL, AND TISSUE REPAIR. DESPITE THEIR IMPORTANCE, NEUTROPHILS HAVE HISTORICALLY RECEIVED FAR LESS ATTENTION AND FUNDING COMPARED TO OTHER IMMUNE CELL TYPES, LEAVING MAJOR GAPS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR FUNCTION IN HEALTH AND DISEASE.THE AINSLIE FOUNDATION SEEKS TO ADDRESS THIS IMBALANCE BY FOSTERING COLLABORATION, PROMOTING DATA SHARING, AND CATALYZING NEW RESEARCH IN THIS UNDERFUNDED FIELD. THIS MEETING CREATED A RARE AND VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY FOR EXPERTS TO EXCHANGE EMERGING RESEARCH, SHARE UNPUBLISHED FINDINGS, AND EXPLORE NEW DIRECTIONS FOR COLLABORATION. BY SUPPORTING THIS EVENT, THE FOUNDATION HELPED TO CONNECT AND EMPOWER RESEARCHERS WHO ARE WORKING TO UNCOVER THE FUNDAMENTAL BIOLOGY OF NEUTROPHILS AND THEIR ROLE IN HUMAN HEALTH AND DISEASE.AROUND 45 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE EVENT, REPRESENTING MANY OF THE WORLD'S FOREMOST EXPERTS IN NEUTROPHIL BIOLOGY. THE ATTENDEES INCLUDED BOTH ESTABLISHED INVESTIGATORS AND EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS FROM LEADING UNIVERSITIES, HOSPITALS, AND RESEARCH INSTITUTES. WHILE THE DIRECT BENEFICIARIES WERE THE SCIENTISTS WHO PARTICIPATED, THE INDIRECT IMPACT OF THIS GATHERING EXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE ATTENDEES. BY FOSTERING COLLABORATION AMONG THESE EXPERTS, THE EVENT IS EXPECTED TO ACCELERATE THE PACE OF DISCOVERY IN NEUTROPHIL RESEARCH - POTENTIALLY INFORMING NEW TREATMENTS FOR A WIDE RANGE OF IMMUNE AND INFLAMMATORY DISEASES. THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AND NEW PARTNERSHIPS INITIATED AT THE EVENT ARE LIKELY TO LEAD TO FUTURE GRANT PROPOSALS, JOINT PUBLICATIONS, AND BROADER DISSEMINATION OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL ULTIMATELY BENEFIT PATIENTS AND THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY AT LARGE.
