| CORE FORM, PART III; STATEMENT OF PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS | To promote oral health to the greatest number of people by providing accessible dental benefit programs of the highest quality, service and value. The organization also offers affordable dental coverage for those individuals in New Jersey and Connecticut without access to a group dental plan. The organization's plans provide access to a broad array of dental services through its vast network of participating dentists. The organization's plans offer quality coverage options at competitive rates. For more than 50 years, Delta Dental of New Jersey has reached out to serve the people of New Jersey and, more recently, in Connecticut. In 1986, we formed the Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, Inc. to aid in creating access to care for the under-insured and un-insured, and support dental education programs for children, as well as dental assisting and dental hygiene scholarships for students pursuing a career in the dental field. Each year, our Foundation awards at least $1 million to support worthwhile non-profit organizations working to provide dental care and education to New Jersey's and Connecticut's underserved populations. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the oral health of New Jersey and Connecticut residents by providing charitable contributions to solve oral health care challenges. Community outreach and employee involvement - For more than 35 years, Delta Dental has been a premier sponsor of Special Olympics NJ. Our employees volunteer to assist at games and competitions throughout the state. - Our employees donate holiday gifts to different local charitable organizations, which have included: Hope House, VA Hospital, Fireman's Retirement Home, Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, Boys and Girls Club of Newark, Eva's Village, United Way, and Toys for Tots. - Our employees participate in the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign each February to generate awareness and education about heart disease. - Since 2004, Delta Dental employees have participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. To date our employees, along with a company match, have donated more than $65,000 to this cause. - During the years 2017-2019, our Foundation, along with Zufall Health Center, New Jersey Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Assistants' Association, and the New Jersey Dental Hygienists' Association, held the annual Smiles for Our Heroes events. Smiles for Our Heroes was a two-day free dental care event for our nation's veterans. From 2020- 2022, due to covid-19, the Smiles for Our Heroes event did not take place; however, our grant funds went to supporting veterans' dental care at Zufall's various locations across NJ. We resumed our event in 2023, hosting a mini-Smiles for Our Heroes, and brought back the full event in 2024. Over the past seven years, more than 1,000 veterans and their families received free dental services with the support of more than 400 dental and general volunteers. - In 2006, Delta Dental created a volunteer policy, which enables all employees to take off up to two workdays with pay to volunteer for local charitable organizations of their choice. Group volunteer activities include building homes for families in need through Habitat for Humanity, taking care of animals at local animal shelters, and helping children in need receive free dental care on Give Kids a Smile Day. Since 1986, our philanthropic arm, Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, Inc., has worked to promote and assist educational projects devoted to the enhancement of dental health and access to dental care programs designed to increase public awareness of the general benefits of good oral health and to improve dental health through the science of dentistry. Our Foundation is an Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization, and we pride ourselves on the variety of programs we have instituted or supported which aid the needy, educate the community, and assist worthwhile oral health-related organizations. To date, our Foundation has awarded more than $26 million towards dental care for the underserved, underinsured and uninsured and dental education programs. In 2024, for the first time in its history, The Foundation awarded more than $1M to support the dental workforce, specifically dental assisting, due to the dental workforce shortage issue across NJ and CT. The Foundation funds projects only in New Jersey and Connecticut. Currently, our Foundation's funding priorities are to support dental programs that provide access to care for children, developmentally disabled persons, veterans, and seniors. Our Foundation also seeks to fund dental education programs, including dental assisting and dental hygiene student scholarships and programs for children. In 2024, our Foundation also awarded grants to support dental workforce development for dental assisting on-the-job training, at community colleges and universities, and mentorship programs for youth. Oral Health Education Initiative In 2007, the Foundation began offering a grant, for up to $5,000, to elementary schools located in Abbott school districts because, currently, oral health is not a mandated part of the New Jersey school curriculum. The goal of this grant is to promote oral health education all school year long, as well as instill good oral hygiene habits at a young age. This grant is geared toward third graders, and schools must complete our Foundation's grant application, which requires 10 oral health lessons (one per month of the school year). Some lessons include reading books about dental health, field trips to local dental offices, making homemade toothpaste, and learning about dental careers. Since 2007, approximately 38 schools have received this grant, totaling more than $132,000. Delta Dental has for more than three decades sponsored the Captain Supertooth program, an educational program for elementary schools throughout New Jersey and Connecticut. In 2024, we revamped the program, which is now known as the Land of Smiles. This program visits K-3rd grade schools in New Jersey and Connecticut to teach children the importance of oral health and to show them how to brush and floss their teeth. Our new superhero Captain Super Grin also encourages students to eat nutritious foods and visit the dentist at least twice a year. During the first year of Land of Smiles, this program reached more than 6,500 students and 500 educators. PANDA (Prevent Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness) is an educational program to help dental professionals, teachers, and anyone who works with children how to recognize and report suspected child abuse and neglect. To demonstrate our sensitivity to the critical shortage of dental professionals, the Foundation has made contributions to: - Atlantic County Institute - Bergen Community College - Brookdale Community College - Camden County College - County College of Morris - Goodwin University, CT - HISPA, Inc. - Manchester Community College, CT - Middlesex County College - New England Teaching Institute, CT - Ocean County College - Rowan College at Burlington County - Tunxis Community College, CT - University of Bridgeport, CT - Wonder Girls - High school dental assisting programs at Bloomfield High School, Montclair High School, Newark Central High School, and Nutley High School.
