Line 1 - Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy Evaluation Form 990-PF, Part VIII-A The Peter Kiewit Foundation (PKF) Engineering Academy Evaluation's goal is to assess The Academy's effectiveness and the impact of PKF's grants for the Learning Community and student scholarships. PKF entered into a six-year evaluation contract with the Education Development Center (EDC), a global nonprofit organization specializing in research and evaluation. The contract, totaling $1.4M, runs from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2030. The evaluation is both formative and summative and is conducted in partnership with another PKF grantee and collaborator, the Nebraska Statewide Workforce and Education Reporting System (NSWERS). It includes longitudinal tracking of student outcomes and analysis of educational and workforce trajectories for Academy scholars. The evaluation contributes to the Foundation's College Access and Success portfolio by measuring the impact of The Academy on student retention, progression, and entry into engineering careers. Quarterly progress reports and survey data developed by EDC are being used to inform program design and delivery. The initiative continues to convene stakeholders and engage academic and industry partners to support student success.
Line 2 - Financial Health and Sustainability Strategy Form 990-PF, Part VIII-A During the tax year, the Foundation implemented a Financial Health and Sustainability Strategy as part of its broader sunset and legacy planning efforts. This strategy is designed to ensure that key grantee partners are well-prepared for the Foundation's eventual exit and positioned for long-term success. The Foundation is investing in the financial health and sustainability of selected long-term grantee partners. Through a phased approach, up to 20 organizations will receive custom support including financial health and risk analyses, development assessments, and financial sustainability planning. Fourteen organizations from the Foundation's Youth Development and Economic Development and Opportunities strategies have been identified to begin this work. The Foundation has engaged external consultants to provide technical expertise and guidance. The strategy is structured as a direct charitable activity and grantmaking program, with the overarching goal of building nonprofit financial capacity and sustainability. In addition, the Foundation is exploring broader sector-wide opportunities in partnership with peer funders and local stakeholders to amplify the impact of these efforts.
Line 3 - Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy Form 990-PF, Part VIII-A The Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy is a scholarship initiative designed to expand access to engineering education for Nebraska students with financial need. The program is housed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) College of Engineering (COE) and supported through grant funding from the Peter Kiewit Foundation (PKF). PKF provides two types of grants: one to support the PKF Engineering Academy Learning Community and another to fund comprehensive student scholarships. These scholarships cover tuition, fees, housing, meals, and books. Year 0 of the initiative began in 2021, during which PKF made initial grants to UNL COE and they hired staff to support program development and implementation. The first student cohort launched in 2022. Since then, up to 160 students have participated across four cohorts (2022-2025), with 40 students per cohort. While some students have exited the program, The Academy continues to expand its reach and impact across the state.
Line 4 - Math Readiness Initiative Evaluation Form 990-PF, Part VIII-A The Math Readiness Initiative, known to partners as the Nebraska Math Readiness Project (NMRP), is a statewide pilot program launched to ensure students are ready for college-level math. The initiative currently includes four Nebraska community colleges (Metropolitan Community College, Central Community College, Western Nebraska Community College, and Northeast Community College) working collectively with 88 high schools across 80 school districts across Nebraska. The program was initially supported through two three-year grants approved in March 2018, with a one-year extension in December 2020. One grant was awarded to Central Community College, which served as the fiscal sponsor for the greater Nebraska community colleges and coordinated efforts among five partners: Central, Western, Northeast, Southeast, and Mid-Plains Community Colleges. A second grant was awarded to Metropolitan Community College. Together, all six colleges collaborated to implement the statewide initiative. In December 2021, the funding structure shifted, and PKF awarded individual three-year grants to four remaining community college partners, Metropolitan, Central, Western, and Northeast, to support the NMRP program during the 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25 academic years. To assess the initiative's impact on student success, PKF committed up to $300,000 in March 2018 to hire an evaluator co-selected by the Foundation and college grantees. This evaluation aimed to measure student outcomes and guide improvements in program design and delivery. A second evaluation contract of up to $170,000 was approved in December 2021 to extend the evaluation for an additional 36 months (September 15, 2022 - September 15, 2025). The contract was recently extended through December 31, 2025, with no additional budget approved, allowing for the expenditure of remaining evaluation funds. The evaluation contributes to the Foundation's College Access and Success portfolio by measuring the impact of this statewide initiative on high school math readiness and its correlation to improved postsecondary outcomes. Results to date indicate improved student performance at both the high school and college levels, and participating community colleges continue to scale the intervention by adding new high school partners annually.
