| FORM 990 FILING REQUIREMENTS | DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES OFMcCURDY SCHOOLS OF NORTHERN NEW MEXICOMcCurdy Schools of Northern New Mexico (McCurdy Schools) was incorporated in 1968, but its history as a faith-based educational mission founded by the United Brethren Church (which later merged with the Methodist Church to form The United Methodist Church) stretches back to the early years of the 20th century. In the years since McCurdy Schools was first granted tax exempt status under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, its specific activities have changed, but the educational, religious, and charitable core of those activities remains the same, as do its close ties with The United Methodist Church. In 2012, it was determined that it would be beneficial to transfer the K-12th grade school operations to a school chartered by the State of New Mexico and operated independently from the McCurdy Schools under the New Mexico charter school requirements. McCurdy Schools continued to operate under the name McCurdy Ministries and in 2017 began using the trade name McCurdy Ministries Community Center. McCurdy Ministries Community Center provides healthy low cost meals to the students, preschool, after school care, summer camp, volunteer, and mental health counseling programs to students and their families, including the following: Project Cario), an on-site mental health counseling program, offers, free of charge, mental health services for children and their families, site-based consultation time with teachers of McCurdy Charter School, McCurdy Ministries pre-K, and children attending McCurdy Ministries preschool, after school care, and Camp Stars programs. Project Carino provided over 2000 hours of mental health services in 2023-2024.We provide a pre-K program that is a state-funded and licensed basic program to help 4-year olds achieve both cognitive and developmental growth to prepare them for kindergarten. We provide faith-based after-school care, five days a week for 3.45 hrs/day. This after-school care provides children in pre-K through 6th grade with after-school activities, snacks, homework assistance, and Christian-based activities. Our faith-based Camp Stars is a 6-week summer program for children who have completed preschool through 5th grade. Camp Stars offers a vacation bible school theme with bible study activities, skits, and arts and crafts coupled with age-appropriate STEM activities incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, to avoid the summer lag in learning and retention by providing children opportunities for academic enrichment. Our Volunteers in Mission program incorporates volunteers, both local and from throughout the United States, coming to our campus to help with maintenance and upkeep of facilities, clerical work, classroom help, serving as tutors, and (for those eligible to do so) helping fill in as substitutes for Camp Stars or After School Care. Seeing our Volunteers faith in action speaks volumes to the children as they go about their work and exemplify what it means to be Gods hands and feet. 90 volunteers participated in the VIM program in 2023-2024The specific activities of McCurdy Ministries Community Center have continued to adapt to the needs of our community. Our programs still include the programs and services we provided under the name of McCurdy Ministries, and we will partner with other charitable organizations to add new programs to serve the families of our community. Creating space dedicated to connecting charitable organizations, service providers, and agencies to encourage partnerships will have a tremendous impact in our community and will result in our being true to our mission: McCurdy Ministries Community Center creates hope and empowers the lives of children youth, adults and families through education, life skills and faith-based programs in Espaola, NM. We have begun the process of redeveloping our campus facilities to allow us to collaboratively and strategically partner with other community agencies to multiply our efforts in serving the needs of families in our community. Within our community center or non-profit we will be able to provide at or below market rental spaces for non-profits, government agencies and service providers consistent with our mission. Partnering with these other organizations will allow us to provide services for adult education (with free childcare offered to participants), grandparenting support, financial planning, computer literacy, adult literacy, and small business and agency development planning and support, to name a few. We plan on expanding the services we offer through Project Cario, now offered to the McCurdy Charter School students, to the community at large as well.In addition to the childrens programs, McCurdy Ministries Community Center will offer additional programs to the Espanola Valley community:GRANDPARENTING PROGRAM. Grandparents raising children in todays society need support in accessing resources ranging from educational institutions to emotional and behavioral support. Grandparents need training in how to communicate with their grandchildrens school, which requires computer literacy and access to computer networks in order to monitor their grandchilds progress and to communicate with school officials. They also need support in accessing community resources for health, nutrition, and affordable care and housing. McCurdy Ministries Community Center will offer Grandparenting support free of charge through Project Cario counseling (all counselors are fully licensed Masters in Social Work), support groups, and connection to other agencies via McCurdy Ministries Community Centers community hub. This support to grandparents will definitely impact our community in a positive manner. As the grandparents receive this support, their grandchildrens school experience will definitely improve, together with their opportunities to achieve their educational goals. The children at McCurdy Ministries Community Center will experience a community of adults that surround them with services and support to overcome obstacles in their daily lives. Adults will be connected on a whole different level, both within their families and at a community level, through community networking. Strategic planning and combined expertise of this network of organizations will multiply funding opportunities. Fulfilling the bold vision of bringing together a varied spectrum of services to support children, youth, and families requires many hours of preparation, dialogue, planning, and intentional focus. Having a space that is dedicated to connecting institutions/agencies and allowing them access to form partnerships with an intentional purpose and common ground will have a tremendous impact on providing services to our community and will result in our being true to our mission: McCurdy Ministries Community Center creates hope and empowers the lives of children youth, adults and families through education, life skills and faith-based programs in Espaola, NM. |
