What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The American Legion was charted in 1919 as a Patriotic War-Time Veteran's organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a community service organization with nearly 3 million members in almost 15,000 posts worldwide. It continuously provides programs that benefit veterans.
