| FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION: | HELP HEAL VETERANS' (HEAL VETS) PRIMARY MISSION IS TO HEAL THE INVISIBLE WOUNDS OF WAR THROUGH CREATIVITY. WE PROVIDE THERAPEUTIC CRAFT KITS FREE OF CHARGE TO VETERANS AND ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBERS THAT ADDRESS THE NEED FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS RESOURCES. HEAL VETS' CRAFT KITS ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF MILITARY HEROES. THESE KITS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO HAVE NUMEROUS BENEFITS FOR MENTAL HEALTH, INCLUDING REDUCING STRESS, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. FOR VETERANS WHO MAY BE STRUGGLING WITH POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) OR OTHER MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, THE KITS PROVIDE A HEALTHY OUTLET FOR EMOTIONS AND HELP THEM COPE WITH THEIR SYMPTOMS. ADDITIONALLY, THE KITS IMPROVE FINE MOTOR SKILLS AND HAND-EYE COORDINATION, WHICH CAN BE PARTICULARLY BENEFICIAL FOR VETERANS WHO HAVE SUFFERED PHYSICAL INJURIES. EACH KIT INCLUDES A KEY THAT DESCRIBES WHAT IS IN THE KIT AND WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT IT CAN PROVIDE, INCLUDING WHETHER FINE MOTOR SKILLS ARE REQUIRED, AND APPROXIMATELY HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO COMPLETE. THIS INFORMATION ALLOWS INDIVIDUALS TO RECEIVE KITS THAT ADDRESS THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. FOR EXAMPLE, COMPLEX INSTRUCTIONS MAY BE IDEAL FOR SOMEONE WITH A SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDER OR WHO IS SEEKING PAIN MANAGEMENT AND NEEDS A KIT THAT ALLOWS THEM TO FOCUS FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME; WHILE SOMEONE WHO HAS SUFFERED A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONCENTRATE FOR LONG AND MAY REQUIRE A LESS COMPLEX KIT. THE CORPORATION MANUFACTURES AND DISTRIBUTES THERAPEUTIC KITS TO SUPPORT THE HEALING OF VETERANS AND ACTIVE-DUTY MILITARY, EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ON THE NEEDS OF VETERANS AND STRIVES TO MAKE A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. HELP HEAL VETERANS HAS EXPANDED ITS VETERANS' WELLNESS EDUCATION BY INCLUDING INFORMATION ABOUT SUICIDE PREVENTION AND MINDFULNESS NOT ONLY TO VETERANS BUT TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH ITS MAIL AND PSA CAMPAIGNS. COMMITTED TO MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, MANY OF THE KITS WE MANUFACTURE ARE MADE OF UP-CYCLED MATERIAL. A 2018 VETERAN SURVEY USING THE PATIENT GLOBAL IMPRESSION OF CHANGE SCALE THAT MEASURES CHANGES IN SYMPTOMS, EMOTIONS, AND OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE FOUND: 81% SAID THE KITS HELPED IMPROVE THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. 97% OF RESPONDENTS WITH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ISSUES (PTSD, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY) SAID THE KITS HELPED THEM FEEL BETTER (AN AVERAGE OF 7 OUT OF 10). 75% OF RESPONDENTS WITH A HISTORY OF TBI SAID OUR KITS HELPED THEM. 89% SAID OUR KITS HELPED RELIEVE THEIR PAIN. 78% OF RESPONDENTS WHO HAD A PHYSICAL INJURY OR WOUND SAID OUR KITS HELPED WITH THEIR CONDITION. WE WORK TO INVOLVE THE PUBLIC IN MEETING OUR MISSION THROUGH A BROAD EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAM. HEAL VETS THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMS PROVIDE A MEANINGFUL WAY FOR INDIVIDUALS, CORPORATIONS, AND OTHER NONPROFITS TO HELP WOUNDED OR DISABLED VETERANS; MILITARY PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES REBUILD THEIR LIVES. TOTAL PROGRAM IMPACT: THE TOTAL PROGRAM IMPACT MADE BY HELP HEAL VETERANS IS $30.1M. THIS INCLUDES: THE RETAIL VALUE OF THE CRAFT KITS, THE THERAPY PROVIDED BY THE KITS, PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS, THERAPEUTIC MATERIALS, ONLINE PUBLIC RELATIONS, VOLUNTEER HOURS INCLUDING COMMUNITY-BASED CLINICS, AND VETERAN'S AWARENESS. |
