COLLECTIONS, CURATORIAL AND ACQUISITIONS OF ARTThe National Gallery's collection is at the heart of the National Gallery's mission, following founder Andrew W. Mellon's gift and mandate to establish a national gallery with works of the highest quality. The collection of paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts traces the development of European achievements from the thirteenth century to the present and American art from colonial times to the present. It comprises a comprehensive study of Italian Renaissance art, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci outside Europe, as well as strong holdings of the French Impressionists, the Dutch and Flemish masters, one of the country's most distinguished American collections, and twentieth-century art. The collection also includes prints, drawings, rare books and photographs. Major post-World War II sculpture is installed in a dynamic and richly landscaped setting in the National Gallery Sculpture Garden.Nearly 160,000 paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photographs comprise the National Gallery's collection.AcquisitionsOver the past year our Curatorial and Collections departments brought over 2,000 new artworks, by purchase or gift, to the National Gallery. Select highlights include a large-scale oil painting, "Christ Gathering His Garments after the Flagellation" by the Spanish-American artist Juan Correa (active 1645-d. 1716). The painting is a large and exquisite example of Correa's mature style. Signed and dated, it would have been created as an object of public devotion for a cathedral or church chapel. The National Gallery also acquired an exceedingly rare coral-handled spoon from around 1570, a highly treasured object in 16th-century Europe for its exoticism as a natural material originating in distant lands. Additionally, the National Gallery acquired a landscape painting by the Cherokee artist Kay Walkingstick, who pictured the North Rim of the Grand Canyon overlaid with patterns based on Southwest American Indian rugs and pottery.ConservationThe Conservation Division continued to protect, preserve and steward our collections through 1,431 treatments of works of art and another 2,281 object examinations, on top of 2,650 examinations of objects arriving from other museums and institutions to go on display in special exhibitions. In addition, the Conservation Division is continuously engaged in long-term research projects about the collection.

EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMSThe National Gallery's public programs provided visitors with unique art-based experiences created in collaboration with artists, musicians, film makers, and community partners. 51,895 guests attended our 91 musical concerts including our popular Jazz in the Garden series. We served 8,514 participants through 71 film screenings showcasing rare, international, and art films across a variety of genres. 42,146 visitors participated in ongoing series of in-person public tours and gallery talks and an additional 12,995 participated in online programs. Our onsite and online multigenerational programs engaged over 15,000 people of all ages in family-oriented activities including artmaking, story time, and online sketchbook club. In FY24, the National Gallery served over 23,000 K-12 students from across the nation in guided tour experiences with specially trained docents and museum educators. Additionally, the National Gallery provided professional development for 6,797 teachers through curated workshops, courses, trainings, and our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) "Teaching Critical Thinking Through Art with the National Gallery of Art". The affiliate loan program, which broadcasts resources on TV stations, classrooms, and organizations across the United States, reached an annual estimated (reported) viewership/audience of 54,170,637. Approximately 37,337 print resources (including Posters, Art Tales booklets, flyers, and bookmarks) were distributed to educators in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Armed Forces (AE), and Guam. Additionally, 852 teaching packets and DVDs have been shared with educators, complementing our robust schedule of in-person and virtual tours for K-12 students. The National Gallery Library continued to expand access, acquire significant materials, and enhance research services. This year, 13,000 new images were added, 4,223 books were acquired, and 1,250 electronic resources were added. The Digital Content Strategy and Experience Division continued to grow our digital audiences, delivering engaging content across multiple platforms. Website visits surpassed 15 million, while social media impressions reached 66.9 million. Our original videos engaged viewers nationwide, achieving a record 21.9 million views across all 50 states. The National Gallery also won 5 Webby Awards - more than any museum in a single year of Webby history. The Imaging Department catalogued 14,385 images in the Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) and continued to produce authoritative images, adding 5,992 collection images, representing 3,752 unique collections objects. Over 3,300 object images were created as part of our move to a new collections storage facility. And, for the second consecutive year, our Open Access Imaging program saw nearly half a million image downloads. The Center, founded in 1979, for advanced study in the visual arts, continued to foster the study of the production, use, and cultural meaning of art, artifacts, architecture, urbanism, photography, and film from all places and periods. In fiscal year 2024, the Center organized 43 scholarly programs, supported more than 50 fellows, and spearheaded hundreds of scholarly collaborations with researchers from around the world through its events, publications, and research initiatives. Highlights from the Center's programs included "Women in Art and Music: An Early Modern Global Conference," a collaboration with the Juilliard School with programming in Washington and New York; the 73rd A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts "Chasing That Which Is Not Me / Chasing That Which Is Me" by actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith; the Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art presented by Michael Cole; and the Wyeth Lecture in American Art delivered by Roberto Tejada. During the fiscal year the Center published "Contact: Art and the Pull of Print" by Jennifer L. Roberts with Princeton University Press, as part of the A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts series.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONSAn integral aspect of the National Gallery's programming is organizing and presenting special exhibitions of major works of art lent from public and private collections around the world, highlighting the breadth of artistic achievement in all forms. Through collaborative relationships with other nations and museums, special exhibitions bring together great works of art and contribute to scholarship in the field.During the fiscal year, 259 lenders from 17 countries and 41 states loaned 806 works of art to 9 exhibitions (7 special loan exhibitions and 2 in-house exhibitions). The National Gallery also worked on another 13 projects scheduled to open in the next five years and administered the tour of 4 exhibitions. "Dorothea Lange: Seeing People" - During her long, prolific, and groundbreaking career, the American photographer Dorothea Lange made some of the most iconic portraits of the 20th century. Featuring some 100 photographs, the exhibition addresses her innovative approaches to picturing people, emphasizing her work on social issues."Mark Rothko: Paintings on Paper" - Joy, despair, ecstasy, tragedy: these are some of the themes that Mark Rothko sought to express in his luminous art. Rothko is renowned for his towering abstract paintings on canvas, but few people know that he also created nearly 1,000 paintings on paper over the course of his career. This exhibition brings together more than 100 of Rothko's most compelling paintings on paper, many on view for the first time. Together, these radiant, rarely displayed paintings transform our understanding of one of the preeminent artists of the 20th century."Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction" - The exhibit challenges the hierarchies that often separate textiles from fine arts. Putting into dialogue some 160 works by more than 50 creators from across generations and continents, the exhibition explores the contributions of weaving and related techniques to abstraction, modernism's preeminent art form. "Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment" - Honoring the 150th anniversary of the first impressionist exhibition, the exhibit brings together some 130 paintings, works on paper, prints, sculptures, and photographs to take a fresh look at its importance and explore the various ways that artists responded to a city recovering from the violence of war and enormous political and social upheaval. The selected works include beloved paintings by Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, and Camille Pissarro and their lesser-known contemporaries. The exhibition reveals the art norms they were rebelling against and the political and social shifts sparked their new approach to art."Spirit & Strength: Modern Art from Haiti" - Art flourished in Haiti, the world's first Black republic, in the mid-1900s. Painters like Hector Hyppolite, Rigaud Benoit, and Philome Obin were known around the world for their images of Haitian daily life, religious traditions, and history. All Other Special Exhibitions: "Etched by Light: Photogravures from the Collection, 1840-1940" "American Places: Featuring Selections from the Corcoran Collection" "Conversations: Kerry James Marshall and John Singleton Copley" "The Anxious Eye: German Expressionism and Its Legacy" "Robert Longo Drawings: Engines of State" "Gordon Parks: Camera Portraits from the Corcoran Collection"

Return Reference Explanation
Part III, Line 1a: The National Gallery's art collections focus upon European and American paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photographs. The collections are maintained for public exhibition, education, and research in furtherance of public service rather than for financial gain. The National Gallery acquires its art collections through purchase or by donations-in-kind. Only current year purchases made from specifically designated funds, not donations-in-kind, are reflected in the statement of activities. In conformity with accounting policies generally followed by art museums, the value of art has been excluded from the statement of financial position. The National Gallery does not deaccession any of its permanent collections.
Part III, Line 4: The National Gallery's collection of over 161,000 works of art includes paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts tracing the development of European achievements from the 13th century through the present, and American art from colonial times to the present. The collection also includes prints, drawings, rare books, and photographs. Major post-World War II sculpture is installed in a dynamic and richly landscaped setting in the National Gallery Sculpture Garden. The collection furthers the National Gallery's tax-exempt purpose as the nation's premier art museum, as stated in the 1937 Joint Resolution of Congress which established the Gallery, "...so that the National Gallery of Art shall be at all times properly maintained, and the works of art contained therein shall be exhibited regularly to the general public free of charge." The works of art are normally on view 363 days a year to the general public; curators, conservators, and scholars study and publish articles, catalogues, and books on the works of art in the collection to further scholarship in the field; conservators examine, clean, and conduct scientific research on the works of art to preserve them for future generations; and works of art in the collection are lent to other art museums throughout the world.
Part V, Line 4: The National Gallery's endowment consists of 129 individual funds, including both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowments. The endowment funds were established for a variety of purposes including the following: acquisitions of works of art, curatorial, conservation, special exhibitions, educational, editorial, and general operating purposes.
Part X, Line 2: The National Gallery is a nonprofit organization exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As a 501(c)(3) organization, the National Gallery is taxed only on income unrelated to its tax-exempt purpose, primarily certain investment earnings. In accordance with the guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, the National Gallery regularly evaluates its operations and tax positions and is not aware of any uncertain tax positions requiring financial statement adjustment or disclosure.
Part XI, Line 2d - Other Adjustments: Change in value of split-interest agreements 1,998,616.
Part XI, Line 4b - Other Adjustments: Catalogue cost of goods sold -731,861.
Part XII, Line 2d - Other Adjustments: Catalogue cost of goods sold 731,861. Environmental liability change in value 4,640,254.

Return Reference Explanation
Part I, Line 2: Schedule I Part II Grants and Other Assistance to Entities in the U.S. The grant to The George Washington University (GWU) is for programming costs to support the creative interdisciplinary innovation in the arts and design field. The National Gallery collaborates closely with GWU on all programming. Schedule I Part III Grants and Other Assistance to Individuals In the U.S. The National Gallery's Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts grants full-time research fellowships to applicants based upon submittal of proposals for the fellowship positions. The proposals are reviewed by a rotating selection committee of the Center's Board of Advisors which is comprised of seven historians of art or related disciplines. The committee's appointment recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Art for final nomination. The fellowship recipients agree to inform the Dean of the Center of any significant changes in the focus or subject of the research project, in which case the recipient may be required to submit a revised research proposal for approval. The fellows in residence convene weekly to discuss their research as a group under the direction of the Dean and the two Associate Deans of the Center. These fellows also present their research during their term before a scholarly audience including other fellows and staff of the Center, members of the Gallery's curatorial and conservation staff, and faculty members and fellows of local research institutions and museums, all of whom provide comment and criticism on the presentation. Fellows not in residence are required to submit periodic written reports to the Center on the status of their research. These interim reports are presented at the annual meetings of the Center's Board of Advisors and are kept in the fellows' permanent files. Upon conclusion of the fellowship, each fellow is required to submit a written summary of the independent research accomplished while at the National Gallery. This written summary is published in the Center's annual report and is publicly available via the National Gallery's website.
Reconciliation of Grants to Part IX Line 2: The National Gallery provided housing to certain fellows during the fiscal year. As the housing is provided at no cost to the fellows, there is no rental income or related expense recorded on the National Gallery's books of record. Therefore, only the cash grants reported on Schedule I are reflected on Part IX line 2, Grants and other assitance to individuals in the US.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11b Copies of the National Gallery's 990 are presented to the members of the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees for discussion and review. The Audit Committee consists of three General Trustees. The Audit Committee submits a copy of the 990 to the Board of Trustees which approves the 990 before the return is filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c The National Gallery regularly and consistently monitors and enforces compliance with its conflict of interest policy by requiring its executive officers, senior level employees, and other employees whose positions have been designated as including significant control or influence over the award of contracts, purchases of goods or services, investments or any other expenditures or commitments made by the National Gallery to review, complete, and sign an annual Ethics Declaration. The Ethics Declaration states that the officer or employee submitting the Declaration understands and has complied with the National Gallery's conflict of interest policy, will continue to comply with that policy, and will consult with the National Gallery's Ethics Officer if compliance questions arise. The Declaration further requires all declarants to disclose any economic interest or employment relationship that the declarant and his or her family members might have in any business or with any individual that is doing or negotiating to do business with the National Gallery. Executive officers and senior level employees further are required to disclose service on the boards of other organizations. Violation of a rule or restriction contained within the National Gallery's conflict of interest policy may constitute a crime under Federal laws and may also result in disciplinary action in addition to or in lieu of any penalty prescribed by law. Trustees, similarly, are required annually to review, complete, and sign the National Gallery's Ethical Guidelines for General Trustees, which addresses conflicts of interest of Trustees and/or members of their family.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 The goal of the National Gallery's executive compensation process is to attract and retain talented executive leadership through competitive compensation that is comparable to other museum organizations that are similar in scope and activities. The performance of the officers is reviewed annually and compensation is set by the Board of Trustees and documented contemporaneously. The National Gallery's Governance and Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees retains an outside consultant every three years to survey the compensation of officers of other art museums and similar sized non-profits to evaluate the reasonableness of the officer's compensation.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19 The National Gallery's financial statements are made available to the public on the its website at www.nga.gov. The National Gallery's governing documents and conflict of interest policy are provided to the public upon request.
