(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Des Moines Black Liberation Movement Collective centers Black voices, leadership, and ideas. We are not interested in reform; we demand radical, revolutionary change. Every Black life matters, and our movement will recognize and fight for every Black life. Programs produced and piloted by DSM BLM Collective are geared towards improving upon the living experiences of Black folks in our community. We stand in solidarity with groups working to bring about racial justice across the state of Iowa.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 ADVOCACY & DIRECT ACTIONS - Organizers plan and execute direct actions (marches, rallies, protests) as well as researches, follows and lobbies for or against legislation and encourages calls to action and engaging elected or other local leaders around issues important to BIPOC. DSM BLM Collective's (the CLTV) Advocacy efforts this year were all non-grant related as organizers continue to seek grants that align with their mission. Advocacy actions in July - September 2024 centered around educating and mobilizing residents around the Des Moines' City Council's plan to criminalize homelessness, resulting in minor concessions from the Council. In October 2024, the CLTV printed and distributed postcards educating community members about the historic removal of School Resource Officers from Des Moines Public Schools. The same month a CLTV organizer served as a panelist at the Iowa Nature Summit discussing the CLTV's participation in the Buffalo Rebellion Coalition and the importance of environmental justice work centering BIPOC. In February 2025, the CLTV educated and mobilized Iowans as the state acted with unprecedented speed to remove gender identity as a protected characteristic under the Iowa Civil Rights Act, allowing discrimination for LGBTQ individuals (representing 3.6% of Iowans) in the areas of employment, education, housing, credit, and public accommodations. The bill introduced on February 24, 2025, passed both the Iowa Senate and House on February 27, 2025, and was then signed by the governor on February 28, 2025. The first-in-the-nation bill went into effect on July 1, 2025. One Iowa led several direct actions against these bills during the 2025 Iowa Legislative Session, and DSM BLM organizers collaborated with the Fair Air Network to hand out 300 free masks at the packed, indoor protest on February 27, 2025. In March 2025, the CLTV put out a call to action when legislators introduced two bills to criminalize homelessness for the entire state of Iowa. Constituents' actions resulted in neither bill being brought to a vote. Also, in February, CLTV organizers mobilized a Justice4Jakarta March in Rock Island, IL, just across the Iowa border town of Davenport. On January 5, 2025, white Officer Brett Taylor of the Rock Island Police Department shot and killed Jakarta Jackson, 21, although unarmed, in front of his 3-year old daughter. Officer Taylor did not face any criminal charges. In May 2025, a CLTV organizer served as a panelist for One Iowa's LQBTQ Leadership Institute centering around safety considerations as a queer community organizer. Organizers also attend conferences and trainings that inspire and prepare them to continue their advocacy work including the Black Women's Health Conference in Des Moines, IA in August 2024, Midwest Black Base Building Convening in Detroit, MI, in September 2024 and the 2024 Debt Free Justice Youth Convening Convention in Berkeley, CA in October 2024. Persons Benefited (Duplicated Count) = 1,173 (plus an additional 111,764+ accounts reached through call to action social media posts throughout the year)
(Grants $ 0) If this amount includes foreign grants, check here ...MediumBullet
28a 42,466
29 CULTURE & EDUCATION - Organizers plan and execute inclusive, community-focused events in addition to hosting educational webinars and in-person educational functions, often combined with and supporting topics central to Advocacy & Direct Actions. To continue to elevate the narrative of unremitting police brutality against Black folks, organizers held a vigil for Sonya Massy in July 2024. On July 6, 2024, white Officer Sean Grayson, shot and killed Sonya, 36, although unarmed, in her home in Springfield, IL, after she reported a suspected prowler. Grayson, fired from his Officer position, faces first-degree murder charges at his trial set to begin in October 2025. Last year the CLTV began sharing information regarding missing Black persons in Iowa, who often do not receive the same amount of attention as missing white people. When organizers hear about a missing Black child or adult, they seek out all available information and connect with the family of the missing person. When needed, they create a flyer with the person's photo and information and distribute the flyer on social media as well as hang up physical copies in the community. Persons Benefited = 41 (plus an additional 17,864 accounts reached through a special Christmas poem social media post)
(Grants $ 0) If this amount includes foreign grants, check here ...MediumBullet
29a 8,114
30 MUTUAL AID - Provides programs geared toward improving upon the life experiences of Black residents in the Central Iowa community. This year, organizers' mutual aid efforts in the community centered around boosting mutual aid requests for financial assistance to meet basic needs on social media and providing resources or where to receive assistance to those in need on a one-to-one basis. Last year, the Board made the hard decision to abandon plans to renovate the residential real estate that was donated to the CLTV in December 2021 due to lack of funds and manpower to bring the vision of using the property for the betterment of the Des Moines' River Bend neighborhood - a historically Black and Brown neighborhood with some of the greatest levels of poverty in Des Moines - in which the property is located, to life. An agreement to sell the property occurred on June 17, 2024, and the property sold on July 12, 2024. Persons Benefited = 508 (plus an additional 160,000 accounts reached related to the CLTV's creation and boosting of a GoFundMe account)
(Grants $ 0) If this amount includes foreign grants, check here ...MediumBullet
30a 6,661
COMMUNICATIONS - Organizers plan and execute campaigns and share informative content and calls to action on social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the DSM BLM Collective's Webpage. Organizers also secure and coordinate television, radio, podcast and in-person interviews when opportunities arise. Persons Benefited (Duplicated Count) = 40,261, which represents the number of social media followers at June 30, 2025

The property sold was a 1,724 square foot single-family residence built in 1914 on a .152 acre lot located at 1406 Mondamin Ave, Des Moines, IA 50314. Transaction expenses paid as part of the sale did not exceed $10,000 and are thus not listed here in detail. 07-12-2024 45,000 The property was donated to DSM BLM Collective on December 20, 2021. No appraisal was completed by either party nor was it listed for sale at this time. DSM BLM Collective computed the fair value amount of the property to record in its financials records of $81,500 by using the value found on Zillow.com, an online real estate marketplace. Realtor.com, another online real estate marketplace showed a value of $111,000. The Polk County's assessed value of the the property at this time was $62,100. During the winter of 2022, the home experienced a frozen water main. Standing water damaged the air conditioning and furnace located in the basement beyond repair. Thus, the offer to purchase the property for $45,000 by DRJ Investments LLC, an unrelated party, seemed fair and reasonable based upon the amount of work needed to restore the home to a livable condition. Online public tax records show that DRJ Investments LLC sold the property for $81,000 on September 13, 2024. 87-3003748 DRJ Investments LLC
