| Form 990-PF, Part VIII-A, Summary of Direct Charitable Activities | With roots dating back to 1814, Bangor Theological Seminary, d/b/a The BTS Center (The BTS Center), is a nonprofit private operating foundation in Portland, Maine with a mission "to catalyze spiritual imagination, with enduring wisdom, for transformative faith leadership."The BTS Center builds on the legacy of the former Bangor Theological Seminary (the Seminary), a private, independent, non-profit religious institution chartered in 1814 six years prior to Maine statehood that closed its doors after its final commencement in June 2013. For 199 years, the Seminary offered exceptional theological education and spiritual / vocational formation for persons responding to a call to ministry. Today, in a time of immense challenge for faith communities and faith leaders, The BTS Center carries on the Seminary's historic, chartered educational mission by offering theologically grounded programs of continuing education and spiritual / vocational formation, including learning communities and cohorts, workshops and retreats, reading groups, public conversations and rituals, and projects of applied research. Inspired by the vision of "human hearts renewed, justice established, and creation restored," today The BTS Center's programs focus seek to cultivate and nurture "spiritual leadership for a climate-changed world."The BTS Center seeks to honor the work of God in the world by committing to these Core Values: Courage: honestly engaging our changing religious landscape Resilience: Cultivating the ability to adapt Collaboration: Doing more together Generosity: Readily giving of ourselves and our resources Integrity: Holding ourselves to high standards in all we doThe BTS Center's programs consist of the following:Leadership Formation:The BTS Center offers learning communities and cohorts, courses, study groups, workshops, retreats, and other theologically grounded programs of continuing education, professional development, and spiritual / vocational formation, to assist with the formation of clergy, nonprofit leaders, chaplains, spiritual directors, engaged laypersons, and denominational leaders. This year's programs have included a nine-month EcoPreacher Cohort, drawing together preachers from around the country to strengthen their climate consciousness; a 5-month Navigating Climate Spiritual Care learning community to help spiritual leaders deepen their understanding of the physical, emotional, mental health, and spiritual impacts of the climate crisis, and to explore how to address these impacts through the practice of spiritual care; a growing Climate Conscious Chaplaincy Initiative, including Chaplaincy Conversation Circles and online workshops for chaplains of all sectors; and a series of Spiritual Accompaniment Circles for leaders. With its focus on Leadership Formation, The BTS Center seeks to connect, equip, and support leaders from a variety of traditions as they lead spiritual communities in a climate-changed world.Expenses: $259,954Equipping Congregations:The BTS Center offers programs and resources to equip congregations for effective and faithful ministry in a time of rapid, traumatic, transformative change. Aware that geography significantly impacts identity and practice, at times these programs are oriented particularly toward New England settings. This year The BTS Center offered a Small Church Leadership Community, "Cultivating Refugia: Building the Resilient Church," drawing together teams from four small New England congregations for a year-long cohort focusing on naming and deepening the unique gifts of small congregations. Through a program called "Claiming Your Call for a Climate-Changed World," offered in partnership with Creation Justice Ministries and the Anabaptist Climate Collaborative, The BTS Center has accompanied twelve congregations in discerning their unique vocation in this time of cultural, social, and ecological unraveling. In June we offered an in-person Green Teams gathering for members of congregational Green Teams, Earth Care Teams, and Climate Action Teams from around Southern Maine and beyond. Additionally, The BTS Center continues to develop a Leadership Commons, a collection of web-based resources designed to help equip faith leaders in the work of guiding communities of spiritual practice through the uncertainties of life on a changing planet.Expenses: $156,925Public Conversations and Public Ritual:Drawing together leading thinkers, authors, scholars, and practitioners, often in online spaces, The BTS Center hosts and facilitates public conversations and rituals focusing on themes related to spiritual leadership and the climate crisis. This year's offerings have included a five-part "Lament With Earth" online ritual series; Season 3 of a popular podcast called Climate Changed, featuring engaging conversations with thoughtful leaders exploring important issues related to spirituality and leadership in a climate-changed world; online public conversations with acclaimed author and public theologian Brian McLaren and with indigenous teacher Sherri Mitchell / Weh'na Ha'mu Kwasset, indigenous lawyer, teacher, and author; a series of "Let's Talk!" lunchtime conversations; an in-person event for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; and several reading groups, including a Summer Fiction Book Club.Expenses: $162,269Applied Research:The BTS Center seeks to approach its work with a posture of "rigorous and reverent curiosity" rigorous, bringing the discipline of quantitative and qualitative research to this work, asking important questions, surfacing stories, collecting data, drawing conclusions, and sharing findings; and reverent because this work is sacred: responding to a divine urgency, a sacred calling, in this work of cultivating and nurturing spiritual leadership for a climate-changed world. Led by a Director of Applied Research and a team of consulting scholars, this year's Applied Research projects have produced articles, presentations, and reports for leaders in congregations and secular organizations, for peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences, and for teams engaged in program evaluation. Research findings assist in program design and evaluation and are the basis for academic presentations at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Religious Educators Association. Currently, The BTS Center is bringing a research lens to its work with the EcoPreacher Cohort, with the Claiming Your Call for Climate-Changed World cohort, and with the Small Church Leadership Community, asking questions about congregational and clergy understandings of vocation in a climate-changed world.Expenses: $234,025Convocation: With roots dating back to 1905, Convocation is The BTS Center's annual conference, bringing together keynote speakers, scholars, workshop leaders, musicians and artists, and a broad group of spiritual leaders interested in exploring themes related to spiritual leadership for a climate-changed world. Incorporating music, the arts, and contemplative practice, recent Convocations have included a blend of online and offline experiences, woven together to facilitate learning, nurture respite, and deepen community. Convocation 2024, held in person in Hallowell, Maine, explored the theme "Hope In Small Places: Becoming People of Refugia Faith," with Dr. Debra Rienstra, Rev. Mariama White Hammond, musician Joshua Long, a team of Creative / Contemplative Immersion Leaders, a team of Lectio Terra guides, and The BTS Center staff team. Through an Online Companions track, those geographically distant from Maine were able to join for a live-stream of plenary sessions and a series of "online exclusive" sessions engaging the Convocation theme and nurturing online community.Partnerships:True to its core value of collaboration, and believing that all flourishing is mutual, the BTS Center does much of its work in partnership with other faith-rooted and secular nonprofit organizations, and with many individuals authors, faith leaders, thought leaders, scholars, artists, and organizers.Expenses: $119,865 |
