SECOND HARVEST OF SILICON VALLEY (ALSO KNOWN AS "SECOND HARVEST") IS A NONPROFIT 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED IN 1974 AND INCORPORATED IN 1979. IT BEGAN WHEN COMMUNITY MEMBERS REALIZED THAT WHILE THOUSANDS OF NEIGHBORS WERE HUNGRY, LOCAL GROWERS WERE THROWING AWAY MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. 2024 MARKS SECOND HARVEST'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY.50 YEARS OF NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORSSECOND HARVEST AND SILICON VALLEY ARE ONE. SECOND HARVEST WAS FOUNDED BY THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY. VOLUNTEERS, DONORS, PARTNERS AND SUPPORTERS HAVE COME TOGETHER TO HELP THEIR NEIGHBORS AND BUILD WHAT SECOND HARVEST IS TODAY. SINCE 1974, SECOND (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) HARVEST HAS CREATIVELY USED THE RESOURCES IN THIS COMMUNITY TO MEET THE RISING DEMAND FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE IN SANTA CLARA AND SAN MATEO COUNTIES.- HUB OF SILICON VALLEY'S FOOD ASSISTANCE SYSTEM SINCE 1974 - SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1974, SECOND HARVEST HAS BEEN THE HUB OF SILICON VALLEY'S CHARITABLE FOOD SYSTEM. TODAY, SECOND HARVEST PROVIDES FOOD TO OVER 450 AGENCIES ACROSS SANTA CLARA AND SAN MATEO COUNTIES. SECOND HARVEST REMAINS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING FOOD AT NO COST TO ITS PARTNERS TO ENSURE AS MANY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY AS POSSIBLE HAVE ACCESS TO FREE FOOD. SECOND HARVEST IS PROUD TO BE AMONG THE FEEDING AMERICA MEMBER FOOD BANKS THAT DO NOT CHARGE THEIR PARTNERS FOR FOOD.- MEETING INCREASED NEED FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE - DURING FISCAL YEAR 2024, SECOND HARVEST DISTRIBUTED 128 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD MORE THAN 10.7 MILLION POUNDS PER MONTH, VERSUS 125 MILLION POUNDS DISTRIBUTED IN FISCAL YEAR 2023. THIS EXCEEDED PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS BY OVER 86%, UP FROM 69 MILLION POUNDS IN FISCAL YEAR 2019. SECOND HARVEST ANTICIPATES THIS INCREASED NEED TO LAST FAR INTO THE FUTURE.- COMMITTED TO PROVIDING KIDS NUTRITIOUS FOOD - KNOWING THAT NUTRITIOUS FOOD IS ESSENTIAL FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN AND GROW, IN 1975 SECOND HARVEST LEVERAGED A FEDERAL GRANT TO ENCOURAGE SCHOOLS TO SPONSOR BREAKFAST AND SUMMER FOOD PROGRAMS. SINCE THEN, ITS WORK IN THIS AREA HAS GROWN EXPONENTIALLY SECOND HARVEST ADVOCATED FOR PASSING A BILL THAT MADE CALIFORNIA THE FIRST STATE IN THE NATION TO PROVIDE UNIVERSAL SCHOOL MEALS. SECOND HARVEST SERVES K-12 SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, AND ADDITIONAL SCHOOLS AND LEARNING CENTERS THROUGHOUT SILICON VALLEY WITH GROCERY DISTRIBUTIONS SO TEENS AND FAMILIES CAN EASILY ACCESS NUTRITIOUS FOOD.- SERVING SENIORS - FOOD INSECURITY HAS NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES; BUT FOR SENIORS, THE EFFECTS CAN BE PARTICULARLY PROBLEMATIC GIVEN THE UNIQUE ECONOMIC, HEALTH AND NUTRITIONAL CHALLENGES THAT CAN COME WITH AGING. IN DECEMBER 1975, SECOND HARVEST EXPANDED ITS SERVICES AND STARTED THE BROWN BAG PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDED A WEEKLY BAG OF GROCERIES TO PEOPLE 60 AND OLDER. SECOND HARVEST SERVES SILICON VALLEY SENIORS VIA FREE GROCERY DISTRIBUTIONS, INCLUDING DRIVE-THRUS AND PARTNER PROGRAMS SUCH AS FOOD PANTRIES, MEAL PROGRAMS AND HOME DELIVERIESCONNECTING PEOPLE WITH FEDERAL NUTRITION PROGRAM - IN 2005, SECOND HARVEST BEGAN THE CALFRESH (FOOD STAMPS, NATIONALLY KNOWN AS SNAP) OUTREACH AND APPLICATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM TO STREAMLINE THE CALFRESH APPLICATION PROCESS SO THAT THESE MONTHLY BENEFITS COULD BE DISTRIBUTED FASTER TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES, SENIORS AND INDIVIDUALS. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING FOOD, SECOND HARVEST EMPLOYS A MULTILINGUAL TEAM OF SPECIALLY TRAINED STAFF WHO ANSWER ITS FOOD CONNECTION HOTLINE AND WORK IN THE COMMUNITY CONNECTING PEOPLE TO FREE FOOD RESOURCES. - COMMITTED TO HEALTH AND WELL-BEING - KNOWING THAT RELIABLE FOOD AND NUTRITION ARE CRUCIAL FOR KIDS AND ADULTS TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL, SECOND HARVEST WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FOOD BANKS TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL NUTRITIONIST, WHO LAUNCHED THE COMMUNITY NUTRITION PROGRAM IN 1979. THIS PROGRAM STILL OPERATES TODAY WITH STAFF NUTRITIONISTS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO PROMOTE NUTRITION EDUCATION, FOOD SAFETY AND HANDLING TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL AS PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO PARTNER AGENCIES AND TEACHING PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS HOW TO MAKE HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES.- FOOD RESCUE WAS IN SECOND HARVEST'S ROOTS FROM THE VERY BEGINNING - SECOND HARVEST WAS FUNDED TO FEED LOCAL NEIGHBORS WITH HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD RESCUED FROM LOCAL GROWERS AND RETAIL OUTLETS. TODAY, SECOND HARVEST STILL LEADS THE WAY IN FOOD RESCUE. SECOND HARVEST WORKS TO DIVERT HIGH-QUALITY FOOD AWAY FROM LANDFILLS, IN ORDER TO INSTEAD PROVIDE IT TO NEIGHBORS FACING HUNGER.- VOLUNTEER-POWERED FROM THE START - VOLUNTEERS HAVE HELPED DRIVE SECOND HARVEST'S WORK SINCE ITS INCEPTION, PLAYING A CRITICAL ROLE IN ITS ABILITY TO MEET THE NEED FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE FOR 50 YEARS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2024, SECOND HARVEST LEVERAGED NEARLY 46,100 VOLUNTEERS, WHO CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN 315,000 HOURS, THE EQUIVALENT OF 152 FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES.THOUGH THE PANDEMIC MAY BE OVER, THE ECONOMIC IMPACT IT HAS HAD ON VULNERABLE FAMILIES IS STILL RADIATING THROUGH SILICON VALLEY. FAMILIES, SENIORS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE STILL HAVING TO MAKE ONGOING CHOICES BETWEEN PAYING FOR RENT, CHILDCARE, MEDICINE, FOOD AND OTHER ESSENTIALS. EVERY MONTH THERE IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER BASIC EXPENSES FOR LOWER INCOME FAMILIES STRUGGLING TO LIVE AND WORK IN THIS EXPENSIVE AREA.AS MORE NEIGHBORS IN SILICON VALLEY FACE FOOD INSECURITY THAN EVER BEFORE, THE COMMUNITY DONATIONS THAT FUND SECOND HARVEST'S ABILITY TO MEET THIS RECORD LEVEL OF NEED ARE NOT KEEPING PACE. SECOND HARVEST IS SERVING THE SAME NUMBER OF PEOPLE AS AT THE PEAK OF THE PANDEMIC BUT WITH APPROXIMATELY 40% FEWER FINANCIAL DONATIONS. SECOND HARVEST HAS HAD TO MAKE MAJOR OPERATIONAL AND PROGRAMMATIC CHANGES TO CONTINUE TO MEET NEEDS EACH MONTH WITH SIGNIFICANTLY LESS REVENUE FROM COMMUNITY DONATIONS THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS. AS A RESULT OF THE INCREASED PRESSURE ON ITS BUDGET, SECOND HARVEST IS CAREFULLY MONITORING EXPENSES AND FOCUSING ON CREATING MORE EFFICIENCIES. IN FISCAL YEAR 2024, IT OPTED OUT OF A MULTI-YEAR LEASE FOR ITS FOURTH WAREHOUSE. THOUGH THIS DECISION COMES WITH CHALLENGES SUCH AS MOVING SOME OPERATIONS BACK INTO TO ITS EXISTING WAREHOUSES WHILE ALSO SECURING ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR EQUIPMENT STORAGE IT IS ULTIMATELY BEING DONE IN SUPPORT OF ITS STRATEGIC GOAL OF GETTING TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE WAY OF WORKING IN THE CHALLENGING LANDSCAPE IT FINDS ITSELF IN POST-PANDEMIC.SECOND HARVEST IS COMMITTED TO SERVING THE COMMUNITY AS LONG AS HUNGER EXISTS. AS SECOND HARVEST WORKS TO MEET THE IMMEDIATE DEMAND, IT IS POSITIONING ITSELF TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY FOR THE LONG TERM. ITS CURRENT SPACES WERE NOT BUILT TO MEET TODAY'S LEVEL OF NEED. THROUGH AN AMBITIOUS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, IT IS BUILDING A NEW HOME FOR SECOND HARVEST THAT CAN MORE SUSTAINABLY SERVE SILICON VALLEY FOR DECADES TO COME. IN FISCAL YEAR 2022, SECOND HARVEST ACQUIRED 10.4 ACRES OF LAND IN NORTH SAN JOSE FOR A NEW OPERATIONS HUB THAT WILL CONSOLIDATE ITS THREE WAREHOUSES INTO ONE LOCATION. THIS NEW FACILITY IS CRITICAL TO ITS ABILITY TO MEET THE NEED FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE IN THE COMMUNITY NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. AS PART OF ITS FACILITY EXPANSION PLAN, IN FISCAL YEAR 2024, IT WORKED WITH AN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN PARTNER TO FINALIZE THE DETAILS OF THE BUILDING PLAN. SECOND HARVEST EXPECTS TO BREAK GROUND ON THE NEW BUILDING IN THE SPRING OF 2025, WITH A MOVE-IN DATE ABOUT TWO YEARS SUBSEQUENT. SECOND HARVEST EXPECTS THIS NEW FACILITY WILL ENABLE THE ORGANIZATION TO HANDLE UP TO 160 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD EACH YEAR, A 30% INCREASE OVER ITS CURRENT CAPACITY. THROUGH THIS CAMPAIGN, SECOND HARVEST WILL UNIFY ITS WORK BY SHIFTING FROM CRISIS OPERATIONS TO LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY IN PERMANENT, CENTRALIZED SPACES.
