BRIEFLY ABOUT BDA - 76 ATTENDEES. JULY 2024: REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE EVENTS FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY: 165 PEOPLE ATTENDED OUR 3-PART EVENT IN LATE JULY - SHOWING OF THE MOVIE "COMMON GROUND; REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE EDUCATION ON METHODS ANDON AVAILABLE RESOURCES FOR FUNDING REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE PRACTICES; AND FINALLY A HANDS-ON BUILDING OF A BIOREACTOR / LARGE COMPOSTER ON THE FINAL DAY OF THE MULTI-DAY EVENT. AUGUST 2024: SUMMER POLLINATOR CELEBRATION - 27 ATTENDEES CAME TO THIS ONE-DAY EVENT TO LEARN ABOUT HUMMINGBIRDS AND POLLINATORS. THEY ALSO TOURED OUR POLLINATOR HABITAT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT AND LEARNED ABOUT BUTTERFLIES, INSECTS, AND OUR PLANS TO PROVIDE FOR THEM AND TO BUILD A TRAIL AND EDUCATION AREA FOR THE PUBLIC. OCTOBER 2024: WILDLIFE ZONE - 100+ ATTENDEES WITH 70 BAGS GIVEN OUT TO KIDS. THIS EVENT WELCOMES "KIDS OF ALL AGES" TO A DAY-LONG EVENT WITH OUR CONSERVATION PARTNERS TO SHOWCASE ALL KINDS OF WILDLIFE (LIVE WILDLIFE IS PRESENT), AS WELL AS SHARING INFORMATION ON LOCAL HISTORY, GEOLOGY, ETC. DECEMBER 2024: FESTIVAL OF THE CRANES - 501 REGISTRANTS AND 1694 VISITORS AT OUR FIVE-DAY EVENT ACROSS THE REFUGE, THE SOCORRO CONVENTION CENTER (FOR INDOOR WORKSHOPS AND VENDORS) AND PARTNER SITES AROUND SOCORRO COUNTY. THIS EVENT IS NOW HELD EACH DECEMBER TO CELEBRATE THE ARRIVAL OF THE MIGRATION SANDHILL CRANES AND OTHER MIGRATORY BIRDS. THIS EVENT INCLUDES EDUCATIONAL LECTURES, TOURS, HIKES, PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS, ETC. |
| PART III, LINE 4C | SAFEGUARDING SANDHILL CRANE HABITAT - FRIENDS PLAN TO RAISE OVER $750,000 IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS FOR THIS KEY REFUGE PROGRAM. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, WE WILL SAFE GUARD HABITAT FOR SANDHILL CRANES AND OTHER WILDLIFE FORFUTURE GENERATIONS. THE PROGRAM AIMS TO ENHANCE THE REFUGE'S ABILITIES TO MIMIC NATURAL RIVER CYCLES THROUGH RESTORATION AND UPGRADE OF WATER CONTROL INFRASTRUCTURE AND FORAGE PRODUCTION CAPACITY. REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE PROGRAM IS A MULTI-YEAR PROJECT TO FIND BETTER WAYS OF BUILDING SOIL HEALTH TO FARM BETTER FOR THE INCOMING MIGRATORY FLOCKS. THE REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE PROJECT BEGAN IN SUMMER OF 2023. PART OF THE FUNDING COMES FROM FRIENDS' RESERVES AND THE REST HAS BEEN PROVIDED VIA FUNDRAISING AND GRANTS. FOR BETTER FOOD PRODUCTION AND HABITAT RESILIENCY, THE FRIENDS ARE WORKING WITH THE REFUGE AND DR. DAVID JOHNSON TO INVESTIGATE AND DEMONSTRATE SUSTAINABLE, REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE TECHNIQUES UTILIZING COVER CROPS. THIS MULTI-YEAR PILOT PROJECT ADOPTS A BIOLOGICALLY ENHANCED AGRICULTURAL MANAGEMENT (BEAM) PROTOCOLON FOUR HISTORICALLY FARMED PLOTS OF AGRICULTURAL LAND COMPRISING 38 ACRES IN THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE REFUGE. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO DEMONSTRATE HOW REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE CAN BE ADOPTED AS A FEASIBLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND ACHIEVABLE PROCESS FOR RESTORING SOIL FERTILITY AND PRODUCTIVITY FOR THE REFUGE; SUCCESS AND METHODS CAN ALSO BE USEFUL TO THE LOCAL AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY. SOIL SAMPLES TO CHECK FOR SOIL IMPROVEMENT WILL BE TAKEN IN SPRING 2026. THE POLLINATOR HABITAT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT HAS BEGUN TO ENHANCE POLLINATOR AND FLOWERING PLANT DIVERSITY ON THE REFUGE. THE GOAL IS TO INCREASE AND DIVERSIFY NATIVE POLLINATOR PLANT SPECIES PRESENT ON A 12-ACRE SITE. AN ADDITIONAL GOAL IS TO PROVIDE EXPERIENCE AND INFORMATION TO VISITORS, HIGHLIGHTING THE AMAZING INTERACTION BETWEEN POLLINATORS AND PLANTS, THE BENEFITS AND NEED FOR BOTH POLLINATORS AND THEIR HOST PLANTS, AND THE COMPONENTS AND TECHNIQUES OF A POLLINATOR HABITAT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT. PLANNING WORK FOR THIS PROJECT BEGAN IN 2020, WITH INITIAL PLANTINGS IN AUTUMN 2023. AN ADDITIONAL .5 MILES OF HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE TRAIL WAS ADDED TO THE SITE IN EARLY 2025. INTERPRETIVE EDUCATIONAL SIGNS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED AND WILL SOON BE INSTALLED AT THE SITE. FRIENDS HAS SECURED ALL FUNDING NEEDED FOR THIS PROJECT TO DATE AND SECURED OVER 50 VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE AMASSED OVER 575 VOLUNTEER HOURS SINCE THE PROJECT BEGAN. BOSQUE DEL APACHE (AND THE POLLINATOR HABITAT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT SPECIFICALLY) IS THE SOUTHERN MOST SITE OF THE RIVER FOR MONARCHS. A PROJECT OF THE INSTITUTE FOR APPLIED ECOLOGY, THE RIVER FOR MONARCHS AIMS TO RESTORE 16 STEPPING-STONE HABITATS FOR A DIVERSE SUITE OF POLLINATORS, INCLUDING THE THREATENED MONARCH BUTTERFLY ALONG THE RIO GRANDE CORRIDOR IN NEW MEXICO. |
