| Part III, General | | Explanation:| In October 2023 Celebration Theatre presented its pandemic-delayed anniversary event 40 YEARS OF CELEBRATION in partnership with One Institutes inaugural festival Circa: Queer Histories Festival. The program revived some of its award-winning stage moments that the theatre has been proud to bring the community throughout its four-decade history of groundbreaking revolutionary theatre. Co-presented by festival venue partner Los Angeles LGBT Center at the Renberg Theatre. The one-night-only event saw 86 attendees and nearly 20 special appearances by original cast members from productions of NAKED BOYS SINGING CABARET THE COLOR PURPLE and more. That same month the theatre debuted its Camp Classics series with an unauthorized live parody presentation of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE starring the iconic Bruce Vilanch and Sam Pancake. The one-night-only event enjoyed attendance of 97 patrons and engaged 5 artists. With venue sponsorship from Mickys WeHo. In November 2023 the theatres Celebrating New Works program presented a workshop reading presentation of MANNIE! A MUSICAL THEATRE FEVER DREAM with lyrics by Wendy Rosoff and Nicholas James Connell music by Nicholas James Connell and book by Wendy Rosoff and Tom DeTrinis. This new work is a love hate letter to all things musical theatre: irreverent stupidity and chock full of musical theatre tropes while shining a light on social inequity and injustice. The work at the Madnani Theatre in Hollywood. The one-night-only sold-out event enjoyed attendance of 56 patrons and engaged 14 artists. Supported in part by a grant from Los Angeles Department of Arts and Culture. Celebrating New Works CNW is the theatres long-running new play reading series designed to shine a light on new and emerging voices within the LGBTQ+ community and the stories about for them. In December 2023 the theatre presented an original comedy variety show QUEER RADIO HOUR: A CHRISTMAS THING for one performance at the Madnani Theatre in Hollywood engaging 9 artists. The show asked the question What would the Golden Age Of Radio have sounded like if theyd given queer people their own station. The one-night-only event enjoyed attendance of 51 patrons. In March 2024 the theatre hosted its annual fundraiser gala an afternoon awards program and community gathering called "Celebration Honors" which gives out three awards to theatremakers: the Chuck Rowland Pioneer Award for groundbreaking and distinguished achievements in LGBTQ+ playwriting and arts advocacy given to playwright Boni Alvarez; the Vibrant Voice Award for emerging theatremakers contributing to queer & intersectional stories given to writer performer Socks Whitmore; and The OHara Appreciation Award recognizing a company member who has gone above & beyond for Celebration David Tran. The event included 23 artists and guests paying homage to the theatres honorees and saw attendance of 102 supporters at the Renberg Theatre and Courtyard Lily Tomlin Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center at Los Angeles LGBT Center. May 2024 saw the return of the Camp Classics series with the unauthorized live parody presentation of MOMMIE DEAREST. The one-night-only sold-out event enjoyed attendance of 66 patrons and engaged 5 artists. With venue sponsorship from Stache Bar. Later that Month Celebrating New Works returned to present BILLY TO HIS FRIENDS by Cassandra Rose. Marine and war veteran Oliver Sipple or "Billy" to his friends stopped an assassin from killing President Gerald Ford in San Francisco on September 22nd 1975. Two days later Harvey Milk outed him as gay to the entire world. Years later a diverse group of visitors at the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco are compelled to share Billys story as a reminder of what being outed has cost us...both then and now. The one-night-only sold-out event engaged 12 artists and enjoyed attendance of 47 patrons at the Madnani Theatre in Hollywood. Supported in part by a grant from Los Angeles Department of Arts and Culture. Celebration Theatre also acted as a fiscal sponsor to three locally-based arts projects during the fiscal year: arts criticism publication Carla Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles; campaigns for new play BLUE by June Carryl to mount presentations at Edinburgh International Frine Festival and make its West End debut in London; and a campaign for 30MM 30 Minute Musicals to present at Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. During the year volunteer company members were engaged with participation in our annual retreat for board staff and company focused on cultivating self-care and creative growth plus group social outings and private gatherings to foster camaraderie and belonging for the LGBTQIA+ community including volunteering with a food shelter and marching in the 2024 West Hollywood Pride Parade. |
