| Form 990, Part III (Cont. 4) | First Project/Program 2023: AGCDC Public Art 2023: Alpha Genesis has been at the forefront of driving cultural tourism and has been a significant contributor to the progression of economic development through public art in Cambridge's historic downtown. Our mission is to "strengthen and enrich our neighborhoods by providing spaces that utilize our community's unique history and proximity to the Harriet Tubman UGRR Byway to inspire conversation, embrace and celebrate diversity, and foster economic development." Alpha Genesis CDC's public art projects are healing hearts while transforming the economic and demographic face of Historic Downtown Cambridge. AGCDC led a 2-year fundraising campaign called Harriet's Journey Home, raising more than 400K, to install a 12-foot statue of Harriet Tubman, called the "Beacon of Hope". The sculpture was installed in 2022 on the 200th anniversary of Harriet Tubman's birth in Dorchester County. It is located at the Historic Dorchester County Courthouse, where Tubman's first orchestrated rescue of her niece Kieshia took place after she was auctioned. This hallowed ground is also the location where hundreds of people were auctioned and enslaved. The Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area Management Board has selected the Harriet Tubman Beacon of Hope sculpture for our 2023 Outstanding Project Award! This prestigious award recognizes an exceptional project, event, or activity conducted/sponsored by an organization, business, individual, or local government that highlights Dorchester's natural or cultural heritage and/or increases public awareness of its history, heritage, and cultural traditions. The Heritage Board made special note of the diverse community collaborators who came together in a grassroots effort to honor a local icon, Harriet Tubman. They noted that Alpha Genesis Community Development Corporation led the project with various steering committee members, including local, county, and state governments. During the two years leading up to the sculpture's unveiling, Alpha Genesis organized a multitude of historically inspired events for students. Dorchester County Tourism Department featured the Beacon of Hope statue on the cover of its annual magazine, "Water Moves Us." The magazine invited the public masses to visit Dorchester County to learn about the life of Harriet Tubman in her birthplace, Dorchester County, Maryland. This magazine is distributed throughout Dorchester County, the Eastern Shore Region, with online view analytics including Washington DC-Baltimore Area, Greater Salisbury Area, Greater Philadelphia, NY City Metropolitan Area, and Atlanta Metropolitan Area. This was a wonderful way for Alpha Genesis CDC to kick off Black History Month 2023! Second Project/Program 2023: AGCDC Community collaboration projects: Alpha Genesis CDC partners with the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center in recognition of Harriet Tubman Day 2023. More than 100 people gathered for a ceremony at the Beacon of Hope statue at the Dorchester County Courthouse, honoring the 200th anniversary of Harriet Tubman's birth in 2022. Alpha Genesis CDC believes in building and supporting key stakeholder partners around the Eastern Shore by connecting through mission-oriented goals and outcomes. Alpha Genesis CDC partners and supports the Frederick Douglass Foundation in Easton, MD by supporting the Annual fundraiser and community events. Alpha Genesis CDC remains committed to strategic partnerships that strengthen alliances across county lines. For the past 3 years, it has been the tradition of Alpha Genesis CDC, in partnership with Artist Mariam Moran, and more than 100 volunteers, to honor the life of George Floyd and celebrate the Juneteenth Holiday by painting and updating the Black Lives Matter street mural on Race Street in Downtown Cambridge. Local citizens and visitors participate in the public art project while learning the civil rights history of Cambridge, MD, and the life and legacy of local civil rights leader, Gloria Richardson. Alpha Genesis CDC was a key contributor to the Harriet Tubman "Take My Hand" Mural. Alpha Genesis CDC We were key contributors to the world-famous Harriet Tubman Take My Hand Mural. This collaborative effort was supported by the Dorchester Center for the Arts, the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Centerand the Maryland State Arts Council. The success of this project is the foundation and inspiration for the North Star Village project. Third Project/Program 2023: Planning of the NSV: Alpha Genesis is respected for the programs we have provided that help connect our community through the shared experience of art and culture. The success of the Beacon of Hope Statue and the popularity of the world-famous Harriet Tubman "Take my Hand" mural have opened the door for larger projects with increased responsibilities and budget. The North Star Village project is historic. This aggressive three-phase plan will honor Harriet Tubman prominently on the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. A successful North Star Village project would bring more than 30 new, livable-wage jobs to Historic Downtown Cambridge. Alpha Genesis CDC continues to build community awareness through events & programs that authentically connect our mission to our community while celebrating our cultural differences holistically through art. |
