| Other | Pt. III, line 4 - Statement of Program Accomplishments: OVERVIEW: We provided funding for programs in education, healthcare, housing, support services, and scholarships for 144 underprivileged children ranging from preschool age through university level in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. We provided oversight and coordination for our programs in partnership with NGO partner in Nepal, Bhuvaneshwori Satyal Foundation (BSF). In Nepal, our children finished the school year and advanced to higher grades. Further, we had four graduates who obtained jobs and became independent of Mitrata support. They obtained bachelors degrees in business studies, social work, and travel and tourism. Additional accomplishments are: (1) A second contact center in Swayambhunath Kathmandu was opened and operated in addition to the one in Baleju, Kathmandu. (2) 10th grade students successfully cleared the rigorous SEE examination and advanced to the 11th grade. (3) BSF enlarged its referral and resource network and participated in an NGO conference in Hetauda, Nepal. (4) Two trips of sponsors and board members to Nepal were completed. (5) BSF hosted a formal alumni event for those who had graduated with excellent participation.(6) One Mitrata employee traveled to Seattle to meet with local board members and child sponsors.(7) The first Seattle Trivia Night fundraiser was launched and very successfully surpassed the fundraising goal. (8) Sponsorships for all the new children in the program and new Contact Center sponsorships were secured by the end of the year.(9) New Nancy Williger Legacy Circle members were obtained by the end of the year and a planned giving meeting was held.(10) BSF Executive Director Leena Satyal and Board President Yogesh Satyal were hosted for two weeks in the USA and participated in numerous sponsor meetings, strategic planning sessions with the Mitrata Board, and attended the M4MK picnic.(11) New officers filling all vacant positions were welcomed and the second President of Mitrata, Nancy Williger, ended her long participation on the board and was honored at a celebration. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN NEPAL: Two Contact Centers, located in Kathmandu, served as a day educational program which prepared 40 children of varying young ages to attend school for the first time. The population served includes children documented to be from low SES families such as itinerant workers or migrants. Child Sponsorship Program: All children were sponsored and fully-engaged in school programs. Most of the children received extra tutoring, family and individual counseling, career counseling, healthcare services, and annual checkups. The children were taken on numerous field trips and cultural trips to widen their educational experience.Staff was increased in the areas of mental and physical health in order to expand needed services to children. Elementary School Children: Thirty-six children in Class UKG through Class 10 were supported with both housing and education and attended boarding schools (or emergency housing) throughout Kathmandu Valley. We supported another 32 children for their education who lived at home often with a single parent. Six children passed the SEE to go on to the 11th grade. 11th-12th Grade Children: Fourteen children in 11th and 12th grade attended various schools. Post 12th Grade Children: Through an individualized approach and our commitment to support each child into adulthood, 23 children attended universities in the fields of social work, education, computer engineering, nursing, dental surgery, medicine, hotel and business management. Graduates from Our Program: Four children completed their education and were able to obtain jobs and become independent of Mitrata. Alumni: There are now 60 alumni who are regularly contacted by BSF. More Support Services: Many of our families continued to struggle financially and needed more social, emotional, and environmental support. Children need mental health services and drug treatment programs. Three children were assisted through rehabilitation programs. After School Program: The after-school program served children in our programs whose parents are not available after school for supervision. Children received extra tutoring and enjoyed activities. Medical Care: All children obtained annual checkups, dental and vision care and benefitted from onsite counseling as well as psychiatric and addiction recovery services when needed. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN USA: Candid, Better Business Bureau, and Charity Navigator: We continue to be a Gold Star Transparency Candid, Better Business Bureau and Charity Navigator accredited charity. Non-Voting Advisory and Young Professionals Boards: We had nine advisors, three Young Professional volunteers, and eight non-board committee members. Scholarship Fund: We continued this fund. With many children going on to college, and rising inflation rates, we recognize the need to help offset the extra costs to care for children of college age. Many colleges add extra fees for exams, preparatory courses, internships, and field trips, and often require laptop computers. Endowment Fund: We continued to manage this fund which is held in perpetuity and invested, with the annual returns used to provide scholarships for our children. Cultural and Oversight Trips: Fifteen child sponsors and two staff members participated in the fall Sponsor Trip to Nepal. Two board members attended the work trip to Nepal in the spring. Four children were graduates in the all-day graduation celebration which was attended by 120 of the other children. Sponsors visited the programs and met with their sponsored children and explored the culture and beauty of Nepal. USA Fundraising and Community Awareness Events: Mitrata hosted three in-person fundraising events, the St. Louis Trivia Night, Seattle Trivia Night, the St. Louis Holiday Bazaar, and a virtual Miles for Mitrata Kids. We also hosted a picnic for M4MK and board members provided community outreach at several organizations.Nancy Williger Legacy Circle: Mitrata hosted an evening with the Legacy Circle members. |
