Explanation:
Our 2023 tax filing was submitted late due to a misunderstanding of how the nonprofit reinstatement process related to our 2023 filing obligations. We included our 2023 documentation with the reinstatement submission and mailed proof of submission at that time. We acted in good faith but did not realize a separate and timely 2023 return was still required. The delay arose from circumstances beyond our control: Our organization previously relied on a CPA who failed to file prior returns, requiring us to pursue IRS reinstatement. During the reinstatement period, several key administrative volunteers retired, creating a temporary gap in oversight and continuity. We did not fully understand the 2022 e-file requirements and mistakenly submitted the 2023 return as a paper copy along with our reinstatement package. For the 2024 return, filing was further delayed while we awaited the reinstatement letter and worked to secure a qualified tax professional. To prevent this from recurring, our board has taken corrective action. We have retained a contracted tax professional to prepare and file our returns, and we have assigned two board officers to oversee compliance with IRS filing requirements. These measures ensure timely and accurate filings going forward. We respectfully submit that our late filing was the result of reasonable cause and not willful neglect. Our organization is committed to remaining in good standing with the IRS and continuing to serve our community.
