What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The organization's primary exempt purpose is to recognize and honor past and present members of the armed forces and to promote the principles and policies as set forth in the preamble and the national and department constitutions of the American Legion. The American Legion is tax-exempt under Section 501 (c)(19) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, as amended.
