The delay in submitting this return was due to an unexpected, voluntary transition of our internal volunteer board officers and an accompanying data-migration disruption within our accounting software. As a small, volunteer-led 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization, we lack permanent accounting staff. During our officer transition, critical historical background ledger balances from our legacy systems failed to sync correctly, creating substantial reconciliation mismatches. Upon identifying these accounting system synchronization errors, the new board immediately took proactive, responsible steps to launch a comprehensive internal audit. We have successfully completed a full reconciliation of all cash asset registers and operational ledger plumbing against our physical banking records down to the penny to ensure total reporting integrity. CEMS has a long history of compliance and acted with ordinary business care and prudence to rectify these software discrepancies before submitting this data. We have implemented strict internal controls, including permanent system closing locks, to guarantee total filing accuracy moving forward. Given our voluntary compliance, the clean audit trail achieved, and our status as a volunteer-driven association dedicated to regional professional education and student scholarships, we kindly request that the IRS establish Reasonable Cause and waive all late-filing fees for the 2024 fiscal cycle.
